Artistic License by Joe Singleton

This month, I decided to skip drawing new characters and give my readers some tools to do their own.

Recently, I've become active on deviantArt (http://heroblog.deviantart.com) and I noticed a few artists had created some figure models for others to use in designing their own characters. I did mine a little different from others I've seen, in that I drew half a figure and mirrored it so that the figure is symmetrical. I created 4 basic figure types in a traditional comic book style and a medium-build male and female figure in a style closer to what I use in Ad Astra.

Each image includes blocks for text and has circles for spotting colors if needed. They can be used as templates for designing on the computer in Photoshop or other image editing programs, or in vector-based programs like Illustrator or Inkscape.

You can print them out and sketch right on them, too. For that, I recommend converting the line art for the figure into a light gray or other color, so that if you want to scan it, you can easily clean up those lines from your image. Here's an example of what I mean.

These are smaller version so you can see what I've got, you can download the larger size files at Deviant Art, where I'll keep them.

And, to show what you can do with them in a few minutes with your image editing software...

One of my Guardians characters, Wildstar. Here I'm working out a new pattern for the costume.

I saved the color picks in the circles provided, in case I wanted to play with a different color scheme and then want to change back.

I just created Dynamaria, as an experiment, but I think I'm going to have to give her a shot. I like the colors and the look of the costume. I'll have to sketch her out and think of something to do with her.

While you're there, please take some time to look around, there's a lot of new art up there and some golden oldies that I saved from my ancient Easyspace web site.

And, lastly, a little homework...

Go build some characters of your own and let me see them. We have an art gallery on the Collector Times and we always need new art. Have fun.

As always, I'm looking for suggestions. I have one I got on Deviant Art, and some other ideas that have been spawned by other sources. Drop me a line with your suggestions.
