So, lately I've been filling in the blanks in my reading, going back and reading a bunch of old Marvel comics. I'm alternating between the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. It was while reading the first appearance of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, I got to thinking about characters who could show up in the sequel to X-Men: First Class.

The original Brotherhood first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #4 and included Magneto, the Toad, Mastermind, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

Brotherhood of Evil Mutants

In these early appearances, Magneto is anything but a noble freedom fighter, rather he's a Mutant Supremacist thug, who treats his fellow mutants almost as bad as he treats humans. He constantly bullies the Toad and Mastermind, and manipulates Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch by reminding them that he rescued Wanda from a crazed mob. His goals are nebulous, at best, mostly he just rants about the humans and how he'll take over the world if only he can eliminate the opposition of the X-Men.

So, I got to thinking about the Brotherhood and how you could adapt the characters to the 1960s fashions prevalent in the first film. Also, keeping in mind that First Class seems to be tied, however tenuously to the earlier X-Men films. So, the Toad is out, he'd be just a glint in the milkman's eye at this point in history. Sabertooth is a possibility, but I'd rather not have him this early in the story. But, Quicksilver? The Scarlet Witch? Yeah, they're possible. And Mastermind? Hell, yeah. You need a creepy villain in the group. And, as an added bit of fun, I thought Unus the Untouchable would be a good fit.

Brotherhood Revamp

For Quicksilver, I thought motorcycle racing leathers would be a good choice. For his sister, something with a touch of the gypsy to it, without an encumbering skirt. I tried to do something with Unus, to give him something of the look of his wrestling costume, but on a sweater, instead. Not sure it works.

For Mastermind, I went with a slightly creepy anorak look. The idea I have for him is that he's creepy because he's pretty badly damaged. His hands are scarred from being burned, over and over, when he was young. His facial features are slightly disarrayed because of beatings received when he was caught using his powers. I figure this causes him to expand his powers and his facility with using them. He should probably be played by two actors, one good-looking to be his "mask", his Jason Wyngarde persona. But, his insecurities will always cause him to snap back to the creepy peeping-tom with the gnarled hands.

I know that it might not be possible to use Wanda and Pietro, as they might be optioned for the Avengers series, but as they're Magneto's kids, I think there's a small chance. Might be that they should be younger, too. The way Magneto was portrayed in First Class, I'm not sure he was sowing many wild oats in his Mutant Nazi Hunter days. But, maybe he did what most most guys would have done, given the chance, once the war was over.
