So, just lately, I've been doing a bit of work for other people. Commissions, a comic story and now some art for a Villains and Vigilantes card game.
Villains and Vigilantes was the first RPG I ever played, not that I played many, but if you saw my collection of super-hero game books, you'd think I was obsessed with them. Most RPGs have players roll dice to determine their character's attributes, starting from virtually nothing. One of the interesting features in V&V is that it encourages you to start with yourself as the basis of your character.
Twelve years ago, I did some art for a game called Modern Knights that was never printed, but you can download it at RPGNow.com. I tried to find work on other games, but the market seemed to wither about that time. I think computer games pretty much eclipsed table-top RPGs and I wasn't sure they'd ever come back, but it seems to be happening, now. I guess I would have known if I was more connected to the gaming world, but I keep pretty busy with Ad Astra and the few other things that I regularly work on.
But, there are people out there who took an interest in my work (thanks again, Dominique) and I got a chance to do some pieces for this V&V card game.
So far, I've only got a few pieces done. Other artists have done most of the character pieces, but there are other cards left to do, Power cards, demonstrating characters using their powers and Plot cards that demonstrate plot points. the pieces I've finished are all Power cards.
The heroine Maxima looks up to see the plane coming down on her. Fitting Maxima and the plane into one small panel was tricky, as drama requires that it be a big plane, not some little 2-seater. So, I drew the nose of the plane coming down and used the shadow on the ground to indicate the size of the plane, as well as the imminent danger.
Motivator uses her power to terrify and dominate the heroes Gunsmith and Skylark. This was pretty straightforward, Motivator standing over the cowering heroes.
Sibyl opens an inter-dimensional doorway. I wanted the portal to be more than just a hole in the air and I wanted to have a classic Steve Ditko other-realm showing through the open doorway. I think it works pretty well.
Motivator mind-blasting Maxima. I figured Motivator would be comfortable as a back-shooter and it allowed me to do both their faces.
This was a tricky one, and I'm not really sure I made it work. The idea is that Laserfire is "haunted" in some way, and it's extremely difficult to convey that kind of thing if you don't have a character's eyes to "act" with. I tried to make him seem wobbly, in flight.
In this scene, Dr. Apocalypse is drawing the soul out of Axiom. It's meant to be excruciating. I tried to convey that with Axiom's arching posture and agonized expression.
I'm hoping to work on some more of these in the coming weeks and hopefully to turn this into a bit of steady work. I like these type of pieces, because they give me a chance to tell a bit of a story. That's the fun stuff.
Now, I gotta get back to the drawing board. I've still got 5 pages left, to pencil and ink on the story. Maybe I'll have something to show with that, next time.
