So, as usually happens late in the month, I start looking for something to do for this column. This time around, I found myself in one of my creative slumps in which I sometimes find myself mired. But, luckily, I had a piece of art that I did for a charity auction coming up, and I thought this would be a good place to promote it, and the auction.
I belong to a mailing list for comic art collectors. I don't collect comic art, myself, but I'm interested in the people who do, because I get to see some really cool pages from time to time, when they post a new purchase on the web site. Anyway...one day a few weeks ago, a message pops in regarding the upcoming Women of Wonder Day 2012 (www.WomenOfWonderDay.com), and an appeal for art for the auction. The money raised goes to help victims of domestic violence, so it's a good cause, and it lets me draw a strong female character, so...bonus. The email mentioned that cover homage type things do well, so I came up with an idea. A couple of sketches trying to make it work showed I needed to rework the layout to suit my own tastes a bit, but Action Comics #1 provided the inspiration and Power Girl is the subject. I figured a cover date of June, 1978 would be close enough to Power Girl's actual debut to work.
This piece marks the very first time I've tried to copy a comic logo into the actual art. Usually, I print it on the page (thanks to my awesome Epson Workforce 1100 wide-format printer!) or paste it up. I always favored the original Action Comics logo, so I was happy it came out so clear and clean. I hate working over white-out, so I have developed a pretty decent hand for avoiding mistakes in inking. Of course, it depends on the piece. If it's for Ad Astra, I just let it go and clean it up on the scan. My hands were very crampy, after that bit of lettering. Not something I want to make a habit of.
I mailed the original piece out today, black and white on Canson Manga paper. Really like this stuff. It's slightly smaller than a traditional comic page but still big enough to make for a nice piece of art.
And, so here it is, in color...
