A Tour of Raunchy FantasyMathew Bredfeldt |
It was announced October 31, 2012 that Lucasfilm was going to be purchased by the Walt Disney Corporation for 4.05 billion dollars. When I heard about this I was torn. Disney buying Lucasfilm meant that George Lucas would no longer be in control of the production of the films. While some of you out there might find this a good thing, I find it kind of sad. Disney also announced that they would be releasing Episode VII of a new trilogy for the series in the year 2015 with new installments coming every two or three years afterwards. After the initial shock of the announcement wore off I ran and went to the bathroom. This announcement shocked me so much it scared the poop out of me. After that, I got on my laptop and went to my usual haunts for information to see what I could find out. Not much that I did not already know from the report on Good Morning America. The only bright spot in this whole thing was that 20th Century Fox kept the rights to the first six movies. Thank goodness for small miracles, but that means we won't be getting Blu-Ray copies of the original trilogy in their original form (pre-Special Edition) really cleaned up and restored by Disney. We can't always get what we want, but I think the Blu-Rays we have now are just fine. Younger brother heard about the announcement at about the same time I did and wanted them to do movies based on some of the novels that took place after Return of the Jedi and also Tag and Bink. I think Tag and Bink was a limited series that was put out by Dark Horse Comics and seems to have a cult following. I think they will go a bit further in the future with the movies and focus on the children of a Han and Leia hook up. Since Carrie Fisher is not that young, nor is Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Peter Mayhew can't get around without a cane I could see Disney doing a movie set far after the Fall of the Empire. Little brother also said something about a second Clone Wars. This is the first time I have heard about such a thing. I texted older brother about the new trilogy and he said that the new trilogy of films will do about as well at the box office as the Clone Wars cartoon "movie" did. For those of you not in the know, the Clone Wars animated "movie" did not do that well at the box office. I checked it out from the library and tried to watch it, but it hurt to watch so much. I guess a lot of people agreed with me and decided it was not worth it. I think they should have just broken it up into three episodes of the series and aired them on television rather than putting them out as a "movie." As for me, I am torn like an old sweater. I mean without Lucas' vision, we would not have the six movies that we have right now. They say that Lucas will stay on as creative consultant, but we all know what that means. I like Star Wars and all six movies as well as the current version of the Clone Wars cartoon, but adding to it without Lucas' vision just seems wrong. I think George Lucas has his perfect sextet of movies and we should be thankful we got that much before he sold the company. Will I go see the new trilogy? I don't know. It is Star Wars, but it is not the Star Wars that I came to know and love when I was growing up. All of you out on the Internet that say the movies would be better without George Lucas doing them; here is your chance to be proven right or wrong. So don't come crying to me when Disney messes up everything by making them into a singing and dancing musical movie like they did for their other properties. My two month old nephew is going to have something to look forward to when he gets older. Granted by the time he is old enough to go to the movies it'll be Episode VIII time, but I really did not see Star Wars for the first time until I was six years old anyway. I knew about it through the action figures that my dad would buy us, but until the whole narrative was laid out by that movie I just thought the action figures were cool.
