If I hear one more person complain that the X-Files movie -
Fight the Future didn't solve the mysteries of the show, I am
going to beat them with a stick. The movie, which picks up where last
season's finale ended, was good -- if you take it for what it is, part
of an ongoing conspiracy to further drain my wallet. If your're still
confused as to why there was no "ending" (typical X-Files) or
some great revalation, consider the marketing angle: the show is slated
to last two (so far) more seasons. If the movie solved everything,
what would be the point of watching the show, and inevitably, the next movie?
Now, actually, about the movie. It was.. alright. It would have
made a good three part episode. Mulder (David Duchovny) looks great,
Scully (Gillian Anderson) looks a bit too upscale. Is she wearing a
DKNY suit in that bomb scene? Most of the movie revolves around Mulder
saving Scully, which was appropriate as she was acting more like a
rookie than someone who has spent the past five years chasing little
green men.
There were some nice bits. I liked the scene with Mulder taking
a piss at the Independence Day poster, and the borrowed ID4
ship in Antartica (I think that's where they were.. :P). I loved his
rant to the bartender about his life, really puts it all into perspective.
So I guess, if you're still debating about it, and you're a regular
fan of the show, go. I would say wait for the video, but knowing Chris
Carter (an evil, greedy bastard the world has not seen the likes of
since Bill Gates) it won't be out until Christmas -- too late for the
sixth season premeire. People at the theatre I was at had never seen
the show -- bad choice. There was an attempt to bring X-Files
to non-viewers, but anyone who has missed a couple of episodes knows that
catching up is hard -- even harder with no prior knowledge of the show
and characters. If you don't like the show, you won't like the movie.
It's that simple. You will leave the theatre confused.
