BISLEY BRUSHWORK GRACES COVER OF CHECKER COMICS MUTATOR #2

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - NEWS!

DAYTON, Ohio -- Simon Bisley, whose incomparable work on projects like Judge Dredd, Lobo, Slayne and Death Dealer has earned him legendary status among comic book fans, has produced a fantastic cover painting for Checker Comics latest release, Mutator #2. The book is shipping this week to stores and is also available for immediate delivery by mail order from the Checker website at http://www.checkercomics.com.

Bisley joins Neal Adams, Bill Sienkiewicz, Astro City's Brent Anderson and "scarebrush" master Dimitrios Patelis in providing Checker Comics with exterior appeal to match the strong interior art of talented newcomers David Berkebile and Anthony Fanning. The big-name covers are a strategic effort to entice readers and to reward early readers of the books, according to Checker Publisher Mark Thompson.

"With the covers by Simon and others who have their own followings, and with low cover prices, we're trying to make it very easy to buy that first Checker title. Then, with instantly engaging stories, top-notch interior art, and the ease of on-line ordering, we want to make it very difficult not to buy another," Thompson said.

Mutator is a high-tech action comic with elements of human genetics and bio-engineering, in which the protagonist becomes the unwilling vehicle for grisly experiments in hyperevolution. The bizarre humanoid mutations he assumes as a result were perfect for Bisley.

The full schedule of cover artists for Checker Comics in 1998 is as follows:

Danger Ranger #1 (July), Chemical Warfare #2 (July) Bill Sienkiewicz - paintings
Mutator #1 (August) Dimitrios Patelis - painting
Mutator #2 (November) Simon Bisley - painting
Danger Ranger #2 (September) Brent Anderson - pencil/ink
Danger Ranger #3 (November) Neal Adams - pencil/ink/color
This array of talent is remarkable from a start-up publisher like Checker, but publisher/writer Mark Thompson says it's part of the company's overall plan to make an instant impact and attract readers to the work of Checker's up-and-coming interior artists.

Checker Comics Publishing will become the first Internet mail-order-exclusive publisher with the release of Danger Ranger #3 later this month, which will be offered only via the Checker website at http://www.checkercomics.com. The company was founded in 1997 and published its first title in March 1998. Checker Comics is located in Dayton, Ohio.

THE DEATH OF VIRTEX?

The flagship book from new publisher Oktomica Entertainment debuts in December and we're already talking about killing him?

With an innovative new approach to variant editions, Oktomica introduces the "Bloody Valentine" editions of VIRTEX #3 on sale in February 1999.

In the conclusion to the first storyline introducing Virtex and his mission in the time-crossed Madlands, readers will get a choice of how Virtex completes his first mission against The Ripnun - a vicious serial killer laying a trail of dead bodies across the new frontier.

Will Virtex catch the Ripnun and bring him to justice? Or will he rid the Madlands of the Ripnun once and for all? And will he survive the experience?

You've all heard these taglines before, but what if the story could end unpredictably? And what if you had a choice as to which ending you'd like to see? The victory or the death?

Oktomica presents the conclusion to the first Virtex storyarc with 3 alternate endings! Instead of guessing the outcome, you get a choice of what ending you want! And there are no toll-free hotlines to call either!

In #3A, the story leads into VIRTEX #4 which ships in March. #3B & #3C, have very different and deadly endings and feature 5 NEW PAGES OF STORY AND ART! These alternate endings are something fans have been clamoring for! What if the hero doesn't make it in the end? What if something happens to make him turn in his "badge?"

Shipped in a 50/25/25 ratio and featuring different covers, the reader decides the fate of Virtex by the version they choose, as well as giving them a different take on the story!

"This is unlike any "variant" you've seen, relates writer/editor Casey Lau. "It's not Fathom, it's not Slingers...it's following the thinking that readers DON'T have to buy all 3 variants to get the full story, and for the major fans or those just curious, to get a What If..? or Elseworlds type story."

"When I was younger Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books were always fun for me, and seeing as Virtex was originally conceived as a second generation CD-ROM comic with various paths for the reader, we thought this would be an exciting way to conclude our first storyarc and have some fun doing it!"

"We're not doing this to make readers buy 3 copies of the same comic, but rather giving them a choice to the ending they'd like to see." Continues Lau, "I remember being disappointed at the 'Batman: Death in the Family story,' where it seemed the majority won the day and I never got to see if Robin could have pulled through instead of dying. So here's a chance at the same sort of idea but that the reader gets to see every side of the possible outcome."

All three versions are written by Casey Lau with art by Kano and Alvaro Lopez, with Mike Baron scripting and John Starr providing the color to the blood!

All 3 'bloody valentine' versions ship in February 1999, and are available for pre-order now in December's Previews catalog.
