Ken Johnston, President/Founder of the Disabled Comic Collector's Club, sent me a nice
e-mail asking me to go over and look at his site. I may be the editor of The Collector
Times, but I'm also a Registered Nurse and the mother of a daughter with a mental disability, so I was very interested in this site, personally, as well as
professionally.
The Disabled Comic Collector's Club site is a great site for folks who are physically
and/or mentally challenged and like comics. The graphics load fast, they are pleasant
to view, and the site is organized well and has lots of information on it. There is
a place to sign up for membership if you have a disability, and membership is free.
There are clear cut instructions on how to meet up with other disabled comic fans
either by using Microsoft Chat or CU-SeeMe software. The disabled comic fans are starting
a channel over on Dalnet using Microsoft Chat called #Comic_Collectors. All of us are
welcome there.
Ken also has some reviews of some indie comics on his site. He encourages folks to
write letters to him and promises to print excerpts that he feels are important. Ken
also has some unique reviews on his site relating to the use of computer software/hardware
by the disabled. He makes it clear that it is his own personal experiences, and not
scientific research. Ken reviews products for creating comic books, animation, and
webpages. He encourages other disabled/challenged people to write in and share their
experiences with products.
If any of you are a disabled comics fan, I'd suggest you give the Disabled Comic
Collector's Club a try. It looks like a great way to meet other disabled comics fans
with the same interests and life experiences. Even if you aren't disabled, you still
should go visit the site : there are plenty of reviews over there for you to enjoy.
