Gambit #1
Publisher: Marvel
Creative team: Fabian Nicieza, Steve Skroce, and Rob Hunter
When's it available?: early February
Well, a "new" title has emerged from the hallowed halls of Marvel once again.
Beside the fact that it's being drawn by Steve Skroce, this book looks like it
has some good potential. Sure, sure, Marvel has run a few other Gambit mini-
series before and they all SUCKED, but I think they actually put some thought
into it this time. The new Gambit monthly series is concentrating more on the
fact that Gambit is truly the 'king of thieves,' instead of what has been
happening in the semi-recent issues of Uncanny X-Men.
(see issue #350) Although it does look like it will take at least 5 issues to
finish up the first story-line, I'm sure it won't take like 20 issues to reach
the climax of the story. (see the new Alpha Flight)
I really hope that in a while, the series will take on a unique style
of it's own amongst the rest of the new Marvel titles and become a hit, or at least
last 50 issues.
The first issue started off with a group of scientists and archeologists,
studying some kind of ancient burial tomb, for a son of an old Chinese
Emperor, that they think will lead them to a copy of instructions on how to
build a space ship. In the next page, the last panel shows the head
archeologist saying, "we don't have to worry about anyone getting into
Hslen's (the Chinese emperor) tomb unless he's the greatest thieve in the
world." Then it shows Gambit walking into the tomb. As I mentioned before,
this is a great book, and I'd urge any marvel, or gambit fan to shell out
$4.50 (Canadian, $2.99 American) to buy this awesome book.
The first ish. introduces some interesting new characters that will,
no doubt, be in future issues, along with 'The new Son' Gambits employer, and possibly,
Gambits savior. (see Uncanny#350 once again)
If I had to give this book a rating out of 10, I'd give it a 7, but I don't,
so I won't. My dream team for this book would be Scott Lobdell, and Joe Madd., no
offense to Nicieza, and Skroce, but they're just not as good.
