Payback

Movie Review by Patrick Dunning

"Not many men know what their life is worth. I do - 70 grand."

That's how the new Mel Gibson movie Payback begins. Porter (Mel Gibson) is betrayed by his partner Val and shot in the back. Val steals Porter half of a payroll job, to get back in good graces with "The Syndicate"(basically the mob).

After coming back from 5 months lying on his back, Porter finds his wife a heroin addict, who ODs not long after he comes back, and his quest for "his money" begins. With the help of a hooker he used to "drive for" (he was her pimp, but a good pimp), and a whole lot of killing, he pisses off the "Outfit"(formerly the syndicate) the Chinese mob, a lowlife crook, and corrupt cops.

I liked it, a completely insane thief at the end of his rope trying to get back the thing he was almost killed for. He doesn't care who he has to go through or what it takes. This is definitely a guy film, the bad guy is the good guy only because everybody else is worse. If you like bang bang shoot `em ups this is about the best you'll find. Otherwise go see the matinee. I've seen it twice, wouldn't mind seeing it again.
