Yup, I'm never one to let a clever pun slip by me. As you can tell,
this month, I'm continuing my Magneto rantings, and going after the recent 3
issue miniseries, Magneto Rex.
This miniseries covers the period just after the Magneto War
storyline, and we see Magnus himself arriving in Genosha in issue one.
Rogue and Quicksilver, Magneto's son, soon arrive in Genosha to see just
what the usual madman is up to. Quicksilver is promptly captured by a
mysterious new character, one of the first victim's of the mutate process
the Genoshans use.
Basically we got everyone plotting against everyone else, but not
much happening. Just how bad was this series? Well, to put it succinctly,
I didn't even bother getting the third and final issue.
Let me just go through a few of my thoughts here.
First, the new character that gets introduced. He's revealed to be
the brother of the Genoshan Revolutionary leader, and son of the guy that
invented the mutate process. While making some sense, I felt it was wholly
unnecessary to drag out the old, tired long lost evil brother Vs brother
storyline.
Second, we have the mysterious United Nations liaison to Genosha,
Alda Huxley. Pun names have just became way too prevalent lately, and this
one especially irks me. I'm not sure why, it just does. Is she supposed to
be watching as Magneto ushers in a Brave New World?
Next, we got Quicksilver. He actually had a fairly decent role.
Just felt that it was kind of wasted to be hanging from a cross for the
entire series.
And finally, there is Rogue. She has often been portrayed as
contradicting earlier appearances, at one time, not wanting to even touch a
person, and then promptly leaping into someone's arms, risking touching
them.
This time, she does it in the selfsame ISSUE. First, she encounters
one of Magneto's old Acolytes, Amelia Voght, and is wary of whether or not
she is telling the truth or not, so Amelia tells Rogue to touch her, and see
into her mind. Rogue protests that she could potentially destroy Amelia's
life by doing so, and ends up just trusting her.
A few pages later, they find Magneto, and the first thing she does,
is run into his arms, and then...TOUCH HIM! Reading his thoughts, and
putting him, unwillingly, in the same danger that Amelia was WILLINGLY going
to go through.
That, in my opinion, is just plain shoddy thinking, and writing.
Now, this is the same writer who will be co-writing Cable with Rob
Liefeld. Needless to say, I don't have the highest hopes for that series.
Glad I dropped it like a brick.
