Subject: Your story on Marvel Mania
Date: Sun, 9 May 1999 14:04:15 -0400
Terrific article/synopsis of your family's jaunt to Marvel Mania!
I'm on the wrong coast to visit the restaurant, but will go the first
chance I get when I head to LA.
You didn't happen to encounter Spiderman while at Mania, did you? You =
saw Wolverine (who, I've heard repeatedly, is pretty much the best guy =
sense-of humor wise and all there), but was by chance Captain America or =
Spidey roaming? If so, did you grab a picture?
Thanks!
James Burghardt
Editor's Note:
The Collector Times published an article on
Marvel Mania in our
September 1998 issue.
Hi James,
Boy, I had to think about your question for awhile. We did Universal
Studios the same day and right after that headed down to Comic Con
International. We saw a lot of costumed characters in a week : ) I do
believe Captain America was there, he was leaving as we came in,
if I recall correctly. I know Spiderman was there, but we found him
outside of Marvel Mania posing for pictures. We took a photo of my
youngest daughter with him. Give me a few days, cause my work schedule
has me working alot this week, and I'll see if I can dig up the photo for
you.
We really did have fun at Marvel Mania, and if you ever do get the
chance to go, I would recommend it. Just take a flashlight for the
bathroom, cause that Mutant underground thing they have going on is
*dark.* The food is really good, and the ambience, well, for a comic
fan, is fabulous: )
I'm glad you enjoyed the article, and if I can find that photo for
you, I'll send it over.

Hello my name is Seth. I have two comicbooks that I would like a estimate
on them. One is DR.DOOM and the savage SUB-MARINER! super villain
team-up published in 1977. The other is THE SUPERIA STRATAGEM CAPATIN
AMERICA part four of six published in 1991. Please send me an answer as soon as
posible.
E-Mail me at kttd.up-link.net
Hi Seth!
How's this for prompt?
Your Super Villain Team Up could be one of 3 issues...I'll list the
issue numbers and the prices, depending on the condition:
#
Good
Fine
Near Mint
1
$1.00
$3.00
$10.00
2
_
$2.00
$6.00
3
_
_
$3.00
The second title I couldn't find in my price guide. Prices guides
don't always list the more recent titles. Comics published within the
last 10 years or so are pretty plentiful, and usually are worth no
more than 50 cents apiece. That's just an estimate, but really, comic
values are based on age, and how difficult it is to find. The more
recent the comic, the less it is worth.
I hope this helps you!

Hi Debi!
Well, if the Death of Superman is in it's orginial packaging
unopened, with all the goodies inside, it should be worth around $10.

Local Shows?

Do you know of any advertising collectible shows in Houston
scheduled for this year?
Thanks
Hi Keith!
I wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten about you. I can't
find any show in Houston that specializes in advertising
collectibles. However, Austin does have a show called the Austin
Collectors Show, run by Bill and Sally Wallace. It is held at Palmer
Auditorium. I don't know the dates, but I'm sure you can call Palmer
Auditorium and ask, if you are interested.
Dallas also used to have a twice year convention featuring the items
you are interested in. I'm trying to find that information out for
you now. I have been to it before, but I have no idea if it's still
in operation or not. When I find out, I'll let you know.

the day trading (stocks) conventions are in the United States.
Hi Michael!
This is a question I cannot answer. All my net searches have come up
empty. The only thing I can do is put this on my website in the next
issue and hope one of my readers can help you out.
Sorry!

I have a comic by Mike Grell in aplastic cover May addition and
it says 1. It is called Shamans Tears and has a blacj and red foil cover. It
was issued in the early ninties.
Thank you.
Hi Mrs Poe!
I assume you want the value for Shaman's Tears #1. It is listed in
the comics guide I own as being worth $2.50, no matter what condition
is it is. I expect that since it's a new comic, it's assumed that it
would be in near mint condition.
Thanks for writing!

Dear Sirs,
Can you provide me with a list of conventions that will be appearing
either in Tennessee or North Carolina?
Thank You,

Hi Barry!
The only conventions I could find listed on the web for the states
you are interested in are located on the Comic Book Legal Defense
Fund site at:
The Tennessee Con link doesn't work, but if the CBLDF is attending,
they should be able to provide you with the details if you e-mail
them.
Hope this helps!

Action Comics #1

To: probts@hal-pc.org
Subject: Valuation request
Would you be so kind as to give me your opinion as to what the
action comics #1 described below should be valued at. I'm
considering bidding on it at an auction in June but I am in
Thailand and cannot inspect it myself (not that I would know what
it was worth anyway). I have always wanted one of these since I
was very young even though I am not a collector. Any advice you
can give me would be very much appreciated. I anxiously await
your reply. I remain
Yours truly,
Robert M. Gelfand
Action Comics No. 1
June 1938, National Periodical Publications, A handsome
comic that is the finest lightly-restored copy we have seen
during this past decade. Excellent original integrity before
any restoration was performed. The covers were not
immersed in any cleaning solutions but merely dry
cleaned. The slightest original dust shadowing is apparent
just above the car, confirming that the dry cleaning was
controlled and not overdone. The staples were replaced,
and the slightest associated rust marks were likely
removed from the staple areas. Only the most delicate
color touch was performed, 1/42-inch pin-point edges
filled at the extreme top and bottom of the spine. No
replaced chips, and there were no major or minor tears
necessary to mend. Again, this is the finest restored
Action No. 1 observed by the Sotheby's consultant
during a decade's worth of these auctions. Overall, an
extremely desirable, investment-grade copy of the #1
book in Comicdom. Encased within a "Fortress"system,
OWL paper is 8.5; consultant grade apparent very fine
plus - 85.
Dear Mr. Gelfand,
This is certainly an interesting question, and I certainly don't
claim to be an expert at this type of high end comic. I had to give
this question some serious consideration. Restored comics
are not valued the same as unrestored comics, they are actually
valued lower. If the comic is graded at very fine plus, I wouldn't
bid personally over $105, 000 American dollars for it. $105,000 is
the Overstreet Guide's price for Action #1 in unrestored fine
condition. The good news about a purchase like this, though, is that
restored comics do increase in value at the same rate as unrestored
comics. This is just my amateur opinion, though...this is what I
would do, if I had the financial means and the opportunity to buy
that Action #1.
Good luck with your auction!

I also have unopened the first comic book when superman comes back to life. Value?
I don't know anything about these things.

Hi Debi!
For you, and others out there with price guide questions, I have
written a little article that will be appearing in the June edition
of The Collector Times. Whereas the price guide lists values for
certain comics, if you read my article, you will find out that
the reality is a little different. My article is called Sheryl's
Guide to Comics Collecting. You can read it any time, because I will
be keeping it up, starting with the June issue.
Helpfully Yours : )
