Where is the . . . toy line?

by Mathew Bredfeldt

When I was thinking of things to do for this month's article, I thought back to some toy lines that have been missing. You know when you look through Previews each month and look at the merchandising section, you ask yourself where is the . . . toy line, where you fill in the . . . with your favorite comic book team. Well I thought of some that I think that should be made.

First off is the Vertigo line from DC Comics. I know that the Vertigo lines have been done to death in other ways like with statues, PVC figurines, and lord knows what else, but I think this would be an excellent complement to what they already have. What die-hard Vertigo reader of Sandman, Swamp Thing, Preacher, Sandman Mystery Theater, Shade the Changing Man (I know someone that would buy this) or any of the others would like to have a six-inch version of their favorite character with some accessories that that character has. You could get Golden-Age Sandman with removable gas mask, gas gun and trench coat. I personally would like to see something like a Jonah Hex figure. Not only has he been in his own comic series, but he also appeared in an episode of the Batman cartoon series. He could come with his six shooters, a hat and a belt to hold the guns. He could be packaged with a horse that he could be posed on. The only drawback that I see with this line is that they would have to be aimed at a more mature audience since the Vertigo line is made up of titles that are MATURE READERS ONLY, but then most of the time they are the ones that have the income to spend on something like this so I think it'll balance out in the end.

Second is a line of Justice League figures. I can really see this being split up into three different lines. First, there would be the Golden-Age Justice League. It would have favorites from the early 1960's like Superman, Batman, Robin and Martian Manhunter. This would give the collectors who like classic characters like they had in the original Justice League a chance to get them without having to wade through all sorts of bad variations of their favorite character that are out today. After all, who wants "Infra-Suction-Cup-Ninja-Windsurfer Batman" when they can just have a plain Batman that we all know and love. The second line would be the Justice League from the late 1980's and early 1990's. I like it because it took the original Justice League and turned it on its head. They brought in characters like Guy Gardener, Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, who were somewhat new to readers, while they kept some of the originals like Batman and Martian Manhunter. This gives some of us that liked the newer line of the Justice League a chance to get the characters that we liked. Frankly, I would get a Guy Gardener and Batman figures so I could reenact a scene where Batman knocks out Guy with one punch. It was so funny. The last line would be the Justice League Europe. That's right the JLE. The JLE would be a fun line because it had characters that were seemed like they were not Justice League material. You could definitely make some fun characters like Metamorpho, Elongated Man and Rocket Red. These offer the most potential because you could have a removable armor Rocket Red, or have a human form Metamorpho along with him in various other forms.

What I would like to hear from you the readers of my column, is the comic book like that you would like to see made into a toy line. It can be one from a new line like Starman, or something older. I don't want to hear a bunch of X-Men ideas because Toy Biz is still cranking them out. Be creative, and E-mail them to me at: torach@hotmail.com. I'll pick some from the ideas that I get and use them in an article next month.
