Having heard about many comic based movies being in the works (whether still in script writing, pre or post production), one can't help wonder where they will lead to. There have been so many mess-ups in the past of our favored heroes and/or villains that whenever I hear about a new movie, I can't help but cringe a little. Sure it could turn out great, if handled JUST RIGHT, but man can it turn out awful if not!
If we look at works such as Superman: The Movie and the character development of Batman in the movies ( and I do say of BATMAN ), they did a pretty good job, really. But I mean ,come one, one or two gems does not make a great industry... let's take a look, shall we?
If we look at more recent follies, we've got Spawn. This was very ambitious, I must admit. The great thing about this movie was it's ability to reproduce the imagery, I really have to give Todd McFarlane that. Every merchandising project he undertakes, he reproduces the characters to a tee, making the movies and toys very believable... Todd has one problem though ... he can't write for shite. Even back in the comic books series, when Todd was writing it, the story had great characters, great art, great concept, but the stories just didn't flow properly and you just lost interest very quickly ... the same could be said for the movie!
To recap on Batman, ah Batman... what can we say about the Batman movie franchise ... Batman , IMHO. was always very good ( Okay, Clooney sucked! ), and they did a great job on Gotham, BUT what's up with the creative license on the villains?! Since when is Cat Woman a freedom fighter for the rights of women everywhere?! and NOT a cat burglar?! I always thought it was interesting that the Joker had been a poor comic/family man who was forced to do acts of crime to feed his family and in doing so, fell into the chemicals ... and Arnold as Mr Freeze?! Don't even get me started ... I liked most of the Batman movies.. I really did ... but there's just so many little liberties taken! I wish they would stick to original character bibles ...
That takes me to the Punisher movie... WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!?!?! They completely rewrote the character, the way things happened, and totally ruined what the Punisher was all about... all of a sudden he was some weirdo who lived in the sewers and meditated naked before going out and killing people... no microchip, no cool gadget van, no access to tons and tons of military type weaponry... just not really the Punisher... just kind of a shadow of him ...
This is not to mention what they did to poor THOR in one of those Incredible Hulk movies and how they ruined the Captain American movie... And nevermind what many of us have heard about possible scripts for a Sandman movie... scripts that start with "Foolish Mortals! do you think you can hurt me! The Master of Dreams! the Sandman!!" ... AUGH!!!!
Still... That being said, I wish many more comic book movies/tv shows to come the best of luck, and hope that they get it right for some of them ... I hope that Wolverine isn't a business man who works for the US government and decides it would be cool to be an X-man, or that Jackie Estacado ( The Darkness ) is a swinging stock broker instead of the dark hitman he is in the comic ... Hollywood has really got to start paying attention to what they're putting on film... we the fans of comic books KNOW the characters, we KNOW these storylines ... do they really think we're gonna say "Hey! I didn't know Jimmy Olsen was Chinese!" ... what the hell!?
Please give us some GOOD comic movies!!!
