Judgment Calls by Patrick Dunning

I apologize. For what? Well, for last month, I threw my column together in a couple of frantic moments at the last minute. This time, I'm thinking this through and taking my time. Time for me is a relative term, though. This month I got a couple of answers from Geoff Johns concerning Day of Judgment, that I wanted last month but whatever. Anyway, on to my ramblings. Welcome to this months Judgment Calls!

First, onto some questions (not an interview, I couldn't think of enough questions, this is just a few things I was wondering.) I asked Geoff Johns, writer of this year's cross-cover event, Day of Judgment:

Dunning:

How do you feel using the Judeo-Christian motifs like Heaven and Hell in comics? Do you worry it may hurt sales? Or do you think non Christian people will enjoy it as well?
Johns:
Nope. It's a story -- and the good guys triumph. That should be all that matters.

Dunning:

Are you intimidated writing the "event" crosscover this year as many collectors groan as these come around?
Johns:
I was, but it seems to be going well. It was a lot to juggle but it's given me a better handle on large casts, in preparation for JSA, and hopefully I can do something similar again some day.

Dunning:

Where do you stand on the whole Hall/Kyle debate?
Johns:
    I like 'em both.

Dunning:

Death in comics seems to get more and more meaningless, yet you don't think that this story depletes the impact of the Final Night story. Um explain?
Johns:
Hal's still dead. He gave his LIFE for the world. Now he's giving his eternal soul as well.

Dunning:

Where was Guy during all this? I mean he'd be more vocal than Batman about Hal taking over Spectre.
Johns:
Guy was busy fighting demons at Warriors. Lady Blackhawk helped out quite a bit.

Just a few things on JLA. We're into the big finale of Morrison's run, "World War III". This is the climax to everything that's been foreshadowed for the past couple of years, since "JLA: A Midsummers Nightmare." A new Injustice Gang, Wonder World destroyed, an instrument of total war headed for earth, and it's only part one. Mark Waid hasn't let much out about his run after Morrison leaves, all that's known is the line-up of the Big 7 and Plas.

JSA, Love it. I'm really enjoying this series, I being a comic book geek that just started reading his brother's comics at the end of the Silver Age (If you go by The Dark Knight Returns as the end of that age) and being a product of the modern age, I simply LOVE this title. All the melding of the Golden age, Silver age, and Modern age characters in a team deeply rooted in the past is just fantastic, I can't praise this title enough. The latest issue dealing with Sand's history catching up with him had my eyes locked to the page. I HIGHLY recommend this title.

Titans, don't have a whole lot to say. I'm enjoying it but it's one of the last ones I read from my monthly stack.

YJ, go read my review of Young Justice #15.

For this month, that's about it. Like I said, go read my review of YJ #15, and my review on the new Transformers TV series.
