Where do I start? Well, Mark Waid's latest comic is cutely entertaining,
but it is not uniquely impressive. It has this severe feeling of déjà vu and
I can't place my finger on exactly what element is causing it.
The opening showed promise. It was a witty mix of humor and science fiction.
It was really cool up until the main character and his girlfriend were introduced.
The main character, Alec, is a high school senior who also happens to be the only
half-human member of the Gate Crasher. He has this horribly cutesy girlfriend
named Mia, who scarily had the same perception of prom that I had - it's her night
to be a little princess. I might have found this more appealing before my boyfriend
dumped me this weekend and now I'll most likely end up at prom with my older brother.
Mia makes Alec promise that he'll show up on time for prom - and let's just say guess
who doesn't show up. He's got a global war that his higher up Hazard forces him
to fight in instead.
This war is to get the Think Tank, the object that knows where every gate
is past, present and future. The mission fails and Hazard explodes the Think
Tank on Alec. Well, my suspicion is Alec has just inherited some of the powers of
Think Tank. Voilà, a superhero is born. Conner's art however is wonder. It's cute
and unique. Probably the best part of the comic comes at the end where there is
little comic strips made with plastic figures with the creators heads pasted on
with a computer.
Gate Crasher is decent but there are so many better comics out there. I
recommend picking this up if you're in the mood for a light perky comic with
minor science fiction undertones. If you want some real science fiction comic
look somewhere else.
