This month's review is about yet another Dreamwave comic... Hey, I only
have one more left after this, so you can rest easy!!! Yes, so we're
addicted to Dreamwave comics. Who couldn't be? The people working
for this company seem well, real, and the artwork is cool. Nice drawings,
nice coloring, hey, it's just nice to look at!
Unfortunately, the story in Echo just doesn't grab me. It's not bad, it's
just not my cup of tea. Sci-fi is fine, but I much prefer the fantasy of
Warlands and Sleeping Dragons (plug, plug!). Echo's story centers
around a group of people who kill Echoes. Echoes are sophisticated
holograph life forms. I'll admit, all my comics are buried somewhere deep
in my closet, and I don't feel like digging them out to give you a full
synopsis of the story. It's better if you read the comic anyway.
And you should read the comic. Why? Because the characters all feel
real. They have real problems and real lives. They're somewhat
refreshing. And, if you're into sci-fi, the story should grab you. But
mostly you should buy it because I like Dreamwave and I think they
deserve some support. Their art is all good, and even if I'm not interested
in all their stories, their writing and dialogue are well done. An added
plus is that their female characters are portrayed as intelligent and useful,
and not even all dressed like bimbos. It's amazing.
If the Echo premise doesn't grab you, I suggest picking up another fine
Dreamwave book. Warlands is by far the best, though Dark Minds (soon
to be reviewed) is also good from what I've seen, and Neon Cyber (now
completed) wasn't too bad. Shidima, due out in 2001, promises to be
excellent.
Lest I sound like a salesperson for Dreamwave, my other current
suggestions are Meridian, by new comic company CrossGen (soon to be
reviewed also), and definitely, definitely, Sleeping Dragons by Amaze
Ink. This new book, only in it's second issue, is quickly proving itself to
be one of the best fantasy comics I read. See my previous review for
more details.
That's it for this month. Next month, I promise something more
interesting!
