Toy Chest #3

Here’s this month’s Toy Chest As always, comments, story ideas or anything else can be e-mailed to me at the address above.

First up, something from the sports front. For those of you that follow tennis, then you may be interested to learn that the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, are going to be immortalized in plastic by Play Along Toys. The figures/dolls will be eleven and a half inches tall and should be out by the time you read this.

Yet more action figures will be on the way from the X-Men movie. Toy Biz will be cranking out more figures later this year. I know of at least two that will be out, and those are Prisoner Magneto and a two pack consisting of Wolverine and Kitty Pride. Good lord Toy Biz, can we find another figure to base our lines around other than Wolverine/Logan?

For those of you who collect the twelve-inch GI Joes, then this one might be right up your alley. The John F. Kennedy GI Joe of the time he spent as a PT Boat commander is now out. I’ve seen it and it is an outstanding piece. My twelve-inch Joes would go into battle with him. A good thing is that if you buy one of the figures, a portion of your purchase will go to the JFK Library and Museum.

Star Wars collectors and fans be on the look out for this one. In November, Hasbro will be releasing a two pack of twelve-inch figures of Darth Maul and Darth Vader. Each one will have special features based on what happened in the movies. Darth Vader will have a break apart mask and a removable hand while Darth Maul will come apart at the waist and have a break apart lightsaber. Next year, look for the release of new figures from the Power of the Force line. At least two of the figures are known and those are another version of Obi-Wan Kenobi that is without robe and has two versions of his lightsaber; one like normal and one that is just a handle, and the other is a Leia in some blue/gray general outfit.

There is a new line from Toy Biz that I know Nintendo fans will eat up. These are figures based on the characters from the game "The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time." This series is due out early next year and will feature the three main characters from the game. The figures will be three inches tall and appear to be jointed at the knees, shoulders and maybe the head. All the figures will come with a horse that the character can ride that is jointed at the knees and hips. I’m not sure about the weapons, because all the pictures I have seen have Ganondorf with a sword and that is all.

Ugh, I guess this was inevitable, but I guess if the demand is there, they do it. Anyway, I’m talking about the "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" toy line from Playmates that should be out about the time you read this. There will be at least four two packs of figures along with two vehicles. The figures will include Lederhosen Grinch with Max, Santa Grinch with Cindy Lou Who, Grinch with Marth May Whovier and Whobilation Grinch with Mayor May Who. None of these appeal to me whatsoever so I’ll be passing on the toy line as well as the movie.

McFarlane Toys is branching out into the Japanese action figure line with their 3D Animation from Japan line. They are action figures from the more popular movies that made it to America. From Akira, we have Kaneda with his laser rifle and Tetsuo has an interchangeable arm. There will also be Kaneda’s Motorcycle sold separately as part of the Akira portion. From Tenchi Muyo, will be Ryoko who will have a stand, wand and the Cabbit. Lastly, there will be Vash the Stampede from the series "Trigun." He’ll come with display stand, hat, gun and a soft plastic coat. All of these are out now, so look at them at your local toy stores. They should be about $9.99.

Lastly, this is probably the biggest news you will probably hear [or already have] if you are a fan of toys from the 1980’s, but in case you have not heard it, here it is. The Masters of the Universe action figures will be returning! Starting in January 2001 look for the likes of He-Man, Skeletor, Beast Man, Man- At-Arms (I got him first), Teela (my first female figure ever), Evil- Lyn, Faker (Purple Prince Adam is not going to fool anyone), Mer-Man, Trap Jaw and Tri-Klops. These are not going some recasts like the new GI Joe with all new stuff that looks nothing like the original. Instead, these will are exact recasts of the figures and will be packaged with the same accessories that came with the figures way back when. Also, and I love this part, the comics that came with the originals will be reprinted and packaged with the figures. The only draw back to all this is the price. The suggested retail price of these figures will be between $11.99 to $14.99.

That’s all for this month. Be sure to come back for more news next month.
