Great X-pectations by Jason M. Bourgeois

ThanX and Praise

Mmmm, turkey.

Yep, it’s just after Thanksgiving for those of us here in the States, and as I think back on this past year, I have several things to be thankful for. And some that actually pertain to comics!!

Before I get into that though, the faithful out there may have noticed something missing last month. Me. I found myself sucked into being dragged back to Vermont, and it took up much time. Mainly because I didn’t want to move back home to my parents. This is something I’m NOT thankful for.

Enough of the whining. What’s so good in comics you ask? Well, let’s see...

  • Chris Claremont’s return to the X-Books. Sure, it didn’t turn out as we hoped, but it seemed like good things were going to happen again. And they are finally getting there. Too bad he’s gone next month.

  • The return of Rachel! YAY!!! This was probably the high point of my year. Sad, huh?

  • Howard Mackie no longer with Marvel. First he was replaced on Peter Parker: Spider-Man with Paul Jenkins, then came Amazing Spider-Man, which J. Michael Straczynski is taking over early next year. Finally, there is Mutant X being cancelled. That’s all of Mackie’s books gone by the wayside. Yay!

  • Speakingof Jenkins, he’s a damn good writer. Buy Sentry now.

  • Speakingof Mutant X being cancelled, the X-Books FINALLY being pared down. I don’t agree with all the books they decided to axe, but most of the books were of low quality. Sure, we’re getting some books replacing those, but the ideas look intriguing... Quality over quantity at long last? Well, we have to see. But we are on the right track.

  • Speakingof Rachel being back, something I can talk about for ages, Cable is an excellent book. Thank the gods it was saved from cancellation. Weinberg is a brilliant writer.

  • Jason Liebig is gone. Bad editor, with bad ideas. The only good thing he did was bringing in Ellis to revamp several books which became Counter X. Because he couldn’t get Liefeld. Whoopsie.

  • Liefeld isn’t working for Marvel currently. Always a cause for celebration.

  • And with all this cheering of folks leaving, let’s give some praise to the new folks Joe Quesada is getting into Marvel. And what the heck, Joe himself. He’s brought in the aforementioned Straczynski on Spidey, and Grant Morrison to revamp the X-Books. Also, Judd Winnick on a Blink ongoing series (That is a rant for another month. I’d love to hear what y’all think about it, though). Brought back Joe Casey to help Morrison on the X-Books, and a bunch of others. All good folks. Marvel is in good hands with Quesada.

That’s pretty much everything coming to mind, but I’m sure I’ll come up with others. Next month, once Christmas and New Years has battered everyone’s spirits around, I’ll give you another top ten list, of the Ten Best things to happen in the X- Books. Some redundancy, but some additional things, trust me.
