Well, it took me a couple of times to read this through and establish my opinion of the book. The creator at Uncommon Con sold me on it with the tag line of, "It’s a science fiction story with a bulldog inspector as the hero." It sounded cool enough, and the cover was nifty. I thought, "What the heck." and bought it.

Sure enough...you have this futuristic city with a bulldog as the head inspector for the police force of the city. First thing you’re introduced to is this scene of one incredibly green police officer, who’s trying to figure out what to do with the alien that has just swallowed his partner. This encounter leads to further foreshadowing of the inspector’s past. The alien was guarding a safe with something important for someone. Do we see part of the mystery now?

The kid genius of Complex City makes toys for the police and hates the only person in the town who's smarter than him. I’m not sure this is solely jealousy. I think there’s something more than that. All the pieces are set up beautifully for the book, and strangely enough, I’m really not sure what’s connected together in the mystery, which is really odd considering I’ve read WAAAAY too many murder mysteries. I can usually piece together parts of it by now. I’m not sure whether I like this or whether it solely annoys me.

Overall, it's definitely worth picking up if you like mysteries. It appears to have several layers to it which always makes things more interesting. I’m certainly gonna look into picking up the second book to see where JE Smith is going with this one.
