HOLY MOLEY! WHAT STINKS?

(A XipeTotec Rant!)

by Stephane Morrell

I'll tell you what stinks! Following the successes of such great comic book superhero movies are attempts to make really bad ones in an attempt to make a few bucks. You've all seen some of them. I'm on the right website to know that you've all got at least one movie in mind as you read this article. The one you were so excited to find out they were making a movie about. The one you waited and waited for, only to find yourself saying "What the hell was that piece of tripe?!?!" ... In the past we've had successes such as Superman, Batman, and even The Mask. Whether you liked these or not is open for debate, but one can't deny that they were successes and still hit pretty close to the mark. On the other hand, studios responded with such abominations of nature as Captain America, The Punisher, and not to mention, painful sequels to original masterpieces.

WHY MUST THE WHEELS OF CAPITALISM CONTROL THINGS SO!? Can't studios stop and say, "Wait a minute!!! This script SUCKS! Maybe we should try to make this particular comic based movie after the success of the X-men, maybe we shouldn't cast this guy just because he's a big name and doesn't fit the part in the least!!!!" ( Or course the response is "What, are you kidding? we've got money in this, we gotta get it out there!") Business is business right? Even when it ruins the image of a perfectly great superhero in the process.

But enough of past history... let's look to the present. We got X-men this summer... what a great flick! ( okay, some of you may argue, but I thought it was great, considering Hollywood put it out there ). But now of course, history repeats itself, the studios are hard at work on the next big comic book heroes. Spider-man I have faith in... I have faith in it because Sam Raimi has taken FULL CONTROL of the picture. He also pretty much slammed Freddie Prinze Jr. for even suggesting he would be interested in the role of Peter Parker... On the other hand, there are rumors flying around that Mariah Carey wants to play Wonder Woman? What kind of twisted circle of hell is this?! Like this woman doesn't LOVE herself enough already. Like we need to boost her ego that much more by letting her be Wonder Woman.

You don't know how glad I was to hear that Nicholas Cage was NOT going to play Superman... I mean Nicholas Cage? What the hell is he thinking?? Next thing you know they'll have George Clooney playing Bruce Wayne!!!! *oops* ... too late! I only shudder to think what they might do to the newly inked deal to produce an Incredible Hulk feature film. "Let's see... how can we ruin the original series for everyone by producing an utter piece of crap that contradicts the very definition of the character?"

I understand Hollywood has to make a movie stand on itÂ’s own. I understand Hollywood needs to write the movie in a "feature film" sort of way, they have to glam things up .... it's just that too many times they CHEESE things up instead and totally ruin the great ideas we have about these heroes that we all know and love. If they took a minute to actually READ lots of original material, get to know the characters. and not rewrite the very CORE of the character ( i.e. The Punisher ), they could end up with something semi-decent most of the time... alas... Hollywood is Hollywood... when a follow up movie to the big success is needed, their way is RIGHT AWAY... they'll throw together whatever piece of CRAP they want ..

*sigh*
