Special Review - Earthdawn

I got an awesome gift from our great and wonderful editor. It was a free Earthdawn cd. It looked like it had maybe a few things and a quickstart adventure, and not having played it much, I thought it would be a great thing to test out.

Boy, was I wrong.

Well, not about the great part. It was better than I had thought. On the cd was not only a quick start module, but there was also a bunch of saved character files, an intro to roleplaying (hopefully for new players), a character generation program, an overview of the world, tools for playing online . . . and the complete rulebook. Yep, everything on that cd.

Now, I'm not going to get into a review of Earthdawn itself, but I will mention a few things about it. It is produced by FASA, who brought us cool games like Shadowrun and Battletech. The game takes place on a post apocalyptic fantasy world, not too original in that, but the game mechanics are. Magic is different from just about every game I've seen, and stats and combat seem to be complex enough to handle a lot of different situations, but still easy enough to understand.

Things I like: The book was well written, gives good examples of the mechanics during explanations, and has an overall decent sense of humor (nothing worse than reading a boring/dull rulebook). It is also the whole rules. Free. It is easy to bookmark things you like, or important parts, because the entire thing is html based and pops up on your browser.

Things I don't like: The entire thing is html based. This makes it a pain in the butt to print out (of course, that's probably not the intention of FASA, but still). Uhhh . . . that, and I've never seen one before Sheryl gave me it. So it may not be the easiest thing to find.

Synopsis: Earthdawn cd = free roleplaying game = goooooood.

I think more people should do this. Maybe this will start a trend.
