Lost Worlds: Knights of the Dinner Table

Sheryl said she had a cool roleplaying game for me to review. In the mail, I received two Lost Worlds books. They were both the same book, featuring one of the characters from the Knights of the Dinner Table comic. It wasn't much of a roleplaying game - but it was a pretty interesting dueling system.

Pretty much, each character in the system, (according to Lost Worlds, there are nearly a hundred) has a book associated with them. This book has in it on certain pages every move that character can do, and damage they can take. You find an opponent, who also plays, and swap books. You keep a little matrix card with stats and a list of the moves and pages associated with it, and when you call a move they bring it up in the book. There are tons of varied types of characters you can play, adding to the repeatability.

It's not too complicated, but it's complex enough to make it fun. The one character I received, Brian "Teflon Billy" had all sorts of manuevers he could do. They also have fantasy cards, different cards you can collect and use with your character to augment them, or not use.

Characters can gain experience (called victory points), and get better, and more than two players can fight each other at once. This just requires a few duplicate books. There was also a bit about party rules, which can turn it into something of a dungeon hack given the right twists.

Lost Worlds has a website, http://www.lostworlds.com (oddly enough), their publisher, Flying Buffalo, also has a website at http://www.flyingbuffalo.com.

It's a good place to go to check on the artists (they're called combat picture books), what books they have, and all sorts of stuff. On the Lost Worlds page is even a link to where you could try out a game online.

At the time I received this (not too long ago), there were only two KODT combat books published yet, but if you're a fan, it's definitely worth it to check out.
