Toy Story by Mathew Bredfeldt

Toy Chest #6

By: Mathew Bredfeldt

Welcome to another month of toy news. So far it has been a rather slow one as every toy store around me is slowly stocking up after the holidays. The only good thing that has come out of this is the fact that my local Toys R Us has knocked fifty percent off the price of the Queen’s Starship vehicle/playset. I would get one, but fifty dollars is still a lot to spend on one thing. Another thing I found just as the year was drawing to a close, is the ultra- rare R2-D2 with hologram Leia and some of the good looking Stormtroopers with COMMtech chips. If you have not found any of those yet, check your local Toys R Us. For $1.97 you cannot pass it up. Anyway, on with the news for the month.

For those of you who already have, or are waiting for your Mad Max figures, then add this little gem to your want list. N2 Toys will put out Mad Max’s V8 interceptor. Look for it later this year.

The WB television show, Angel, is finally getting the figure treatment from Moore Action Collectables. There will be a new version of Angel in the line along with Faith and the vary attractive Cordelia. I’ll get the Cordelia, but I’m still waiting for the alternate version of Cordelia from the Buffy line in her cheerleader outfit.

Lego is playing off the success of their other Star Wars based sets, by releasing some new sets that should have been out with the originals. The AT-ST walker, the Imperial Shuttle (like those used in Return of the Jedi), a Droid Escape set (which I have seen and it’s cute.) Battle Droid Carrier, TIE Fighter and Watto’s Junkyard (which is just another couple of pod racers that you can build). Some of these should be out now so look for them at your local Target or Toys R Us.

McFarlane Toys is adding football figures to their line of sports figures. In this first set they are putting in the likes of Kurt Warner, Warren Sapp, Emmitt Smith, Eddie George, Edgerrin James and Randy Moss. I’m hoping to get an Emmitt Smith just because it’s the first Texas player Todd has put in any of his sports lines. Hey Todd, would it kill you to put in a player from the Texas Rangers? How about multiple Gold Glove catcher Ivan Rodriguez?

Playmates toys is going all out with the action figures for the Tomb Raider movie. Look for the line to have in its first release four different versions of Lara Croft based on the way she is dressed in the movie. Look for her in her combat gear, motorcycle leathers, arctic gear and Cambodian gear (tank top and camouflage pants). There will also be a Stone Warrior figure in the line, which I guess will be one of her enemies in the movie. There will also be a movie two pack of Lara and a training robot. Lastly, look for a couple of twelve-inch Lara figures with her in her combat gear and motorcycle leathers. These should be hitting stores in April so be ready.

Jakks Pacific is branching out from the wresting ring and into movies with their line for the movie Mummy Returns. Look for the figures of Rick O’Connell (Brenden Frasier’s character), Anubis & another character (I’m not going to spoil it for you), Imhotep and the Scorpion King (played by the WWF’s The Rock.). There will also be a two pack of figures with one being the Scorpion King and the other being The Rock. Trust me, when you see the Scorpion King figure you will instantly think ‘The Rock’ because I did. Look for them this month in stores.

DC Direct is putting out its latest line that could be called the creepy characters. Look for Deadman with glow in the dark chest, head and logo. Demon who stands six inches tall and has a cloth cape. Lastly is the Hal Jordan Spectre with cloth cape, hood and is poseable. Look for these three in your comic store in June.

Toy Biz is gearing up to release a new line called Marvel Comics: The Dark Side. These Diamond Distributor exclusives should be out this month with figures of Dr. Strange, Dormammu (who I thought was always funny looking because it looked like a man with a ski mask on fire), Vermin (where did this character come from?) and Man-Thing. I’m getting a Man-Thing as birthday present for someone.

That looks like all for this month. I hope that you take some more time and read the rest of the articles that I have written.
