Great X-pectations by Jason M. Bourgeois

A Chance Has Passed...Again

Welcome back!

I promised I’d let you in on what Marvel has done to piss me off now, so let us get right to it.

Oh, look. Cable.

Again

How could Marvel possibly make this situation any worse? Well, let us recap what has already transpired.

About a year ago, Marvel hired a writer for Cable. Some guy named Robert Weinberg with actual writing history, and several awards to his name. He built a new fan base for Cable, and actually turned him into a likable character. When the threat of cancellation loomed over the book like the shadow of night, those fans wrote in, having enjoyed Bob’s run and wanting it to continue further. Marvel saved the book.

Two months later, Marvel removed Bob as the writer.

That brings us up to the current time.

So, how does this get worse?

First off, the writer Marvel had chosen, decided to leave the comic before he even started any work on it. Bob was granted a one-issue extension on Cable. So far, so good.

Bob’s first six-issue storyline in Cable, "The Undying," has just been nominated for the Bram Stoker award. Comics simply don’t get nominated for things like this very often. This is excellent publicity for the book, and shows the strength of the writer on the book.

For a few months now, Cable has actually exceeded it’s print run, and totally sold out, some issues actually being difficult to find.

So, does Marvel decide to let Weinberg remain on the title?

Nope.

Insert about five minutes of screaming and cursing Liefeld’s name here.

The fans put fingers to keyboards once more, blasting off letters to Marvel, requesting that Bob be kept on the book, for the second time in about a month, and again, we get shot down. We were told a new writer has already been chosen, and Bob doesn’t know who that writer is, so odds are great that it isn’t him.

Or, Marvel has yet to inform Bob of this, which is highly unlikely.

So, we have a book by a highly-acclaimed writer, with a large following, nominated for awards, and selling out, which Marvel chooses to not allow to continue as is.

Does this make sense to anyone?

Hello?

Next thing they will tell us is that the new writer is Scott Lobdell.

I look back on my rant, and see that I’ve used a lot of short sentences and paragraphs. My frustration is palpable this month.

Looks like I’m going to cut this short, before I call for Marvel executives' heads on silver platters to be laid at my feet.

Until next month, when I will hopefully have something OTHER than Cable to rant about, take care of yourselves, and question reality.
