This month we're going to look at actual comics on the web. These days,
anyone with a computer and a scanner can make their own comic (I know
because I've done it myself) and get it out there for the public to see.
Along with all the "amateurs", there are quit a few professional sites as
well. One of the best, in my opinion, is The Matrix
website. For any fan of the movie that can't wait for the sequels, this
is the place to get your fix. Here you can find some of comicdoms best
writers and artist contributing stories that are set in the Matrix
universe. Some of the folks who have already added their unique perspectives
to the story are: Neil Gaiman, Dave Gibbons, Bill Sienkiewicz, Tim Sale.
aul Chadwick and even the Wachowski brothers themselves. This is a
smorgasbord of great stuff and I suggest you stop by and stuff your faces.
The Dark Horse Comics site
also has new, original strips starring many of their most famous characters.
Monkeyman and O'Brien, Buffy, Angel, Star Wars, Spy Boy and Concrete are
just a few that you will find here. They are adding new stuff all the time,
so this is one site you will definitely want to bookmark and revisit at least
once a month.
Gravitywell Productions offers a wide
variety of "amateur" strips and comics, as well as music and animation. They
update the site about six times a week so there are always new things to check out.
For those looking for a little manga online, there's MegaTokyo.
This is an ongoing strip that is posted on a daily basis. As of this writing, they
have already posted over 180 strips and show no signs of slowing down. A reader out
there submitted this site to me and it took me a few strips before I got into it,
but now it's one of my favorite reads each morning.
Five Star
Michiana isn't actually a site, as it is a resource guide. They have listings
broken down by Comic books, Anthologies, Manga, Strips, etc. Once you click on which
category you're interested in, you get a nice alphabetically list of sites with a
small description of what you can expect to find. If a comic or strip isn't listed
here, it probably doesn't exist.
That's all for this month, so until next time - happy surfing.
