What I Care to See
By Stephane Morrell

"JOY RIDE"

Walking into this, I didn't really expect a whole lot more than a little teen "suspense" film that has been the bane of my horror movie going existence for the last few years. However, I've gotta say that I was pleasantly surprised.

The movie starts off with a college kid on his way back home. After bailing his brother out of jail, they set off in his newly bought car towards home. Along the way, they decide to play some mind games with one of the truckers on the new CB radio they bought for the car, and unfortunately, they've picked the wrong guy to mess with.

The movie is actually very high suspense, not too many cheap-o scares with loud noises or animals jumping out of the dark. It keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering if you'll ever find out just WHO this stalker is and if he's one of the people we've seen in the movie. They're VERY careful to not show his face at any point and you get an interesting surprise at the end.

Definitely worth the watch!

FROM HELL

Far be it for me NOT to see a Johnny Depp film. And a Johnny Depp film based on a comic, no less! This is another great movie in the bag for Mr. Depp. A wonderful retelling of the Jack the Ripper using a fictional theory on what could have possibly happened back then. From what I understand, the characters in the movie have undergone somewhat of a merge since the comic book, and Johnny's character, Inspector Averline, seems to have acquired psychic powers he did not have in the book. Nevertheless, this is a wonderfully dark movie, based in 1888 London, England amongst the Whitechapel community where scared prostitutes ( Or Unfortunates as they are called here ) are being murdered one by one.... But is there a reason these select ones are being pegged off? At the risk of ruining anything, I guess you'll have to see for yourself.

There's a few scenes that may not be for the squeamish (sp?), such as the first frontal lobotomies, but the gore is not overly blatant as it would have been in a lot of other "horror" movies. It's hard to place this in a genre, I suppose it would be a "Scotland Yard murder mystery" ... but with a twist and a much darker feel to it. And since it involves The Ripper, even the descriptions of things unseen can be quite gruesome...

13 GHOSTS

I DO care to see this.... But I haven't : (
