Zoolander

The Spiff-O-Meter

9 of 10 on the Spiff-O-Meter

I went into this movie after a nasty Calculus exam hoping to find a silly, funny story that I wouldn’t have to expend too many brain cells to watch. It did it’s job quite well. Ben Stiller’s directorial debut was deeply amusing and a cute feel-good sort of movie. This first not only pot-shots the fashion industry, it additionally pot shots much of pop culture. It’s got GREAT cameos from David Bowie, David Duchovny, Billy Zane, and many, many more. I laughed out loud when I realized that the evil Russian fashion woman was being played by Milla Jovovich, who really did start out as a fashion model. Ben Stiller has his whole family in this movie (Hey! Kinda like my home made schlock film only with a bigger budget). If you want a silly no-need-to-think-too-deeply-here-kiddies type of movie this would be my very strong recommendation.

Bandits

Zack (of Console-tations) wanted to go see the latest Bruce Willis movie, and the trailer looked amusing so we decided to go see it while we were up in Ft. Worth. Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thorton star as two convicts who break out of jail and become bank robbers...very, very successful bank robbers in order to buy a hotel in Mexico. In between a heist Thorton’s character gets run over by a very unstable woman played by Cate Blanchett. Blanchett’s character is very unhappy with her marriage and her life, and is. I repeat, really really unstable. She falls in love with both robbers, and they both fall in love with her. It’s a cliche roller coaster ride from there and it starts to drag at about that point. However, by the end it picks up and resolves the whole story in a really cool, totally unexpected way. Overall, it’s an entertaining movie. I give it a 7. It’s ending makes it better than average.
