Toy Story by Mathew Bredfeldt

Toy Chest #17

Another month and I finally got someone to write me an e-mail. To that person I want to say, thank you! At least I know someone besides me and a few others reads this column on a monthly basis. Just e-mail me with comments, questions, article ideas or anything else toy related. I would appreciate it. Now on with the show!

The first thing on the plate for this month is that Hasbro has released sketches for some of the next wave of GI Joe figures. Look for new versions of Quick Kick (is he really that popular?), Striker (looks a lot like Stalker), Firefly (he lacks that cool gray and black camouflage pattern of old) and a Scarlett figure that will have every fanboy drooling when they see it. The new GI Joe line is already out and I'm vary unimpressed with it. Sure some of the figures look good, but they seem to lack the same personalities that the original figures had. Say what you will about the new figures, I will stick with the originals.

Art Asylum has gotten the rights to do figures of the entire Star Trek line including both the latest show in the Star Trek franchise, Enterprise and the new Movie Star Trek X: Nemesis. The figures will be seven inches tall and have the same detail as their Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon figures. Plus they will be doing scale toy props and starships. Look for more information next month.

Those of you who have been waiting for the new He-Man line will have to wait a few months longer. According to reports, the line has been delayed until July or August to coincide with the release of a He-Man television special. I've seen pictures of this line and it looks sweet so the wait will be well worth it.

What is the deal with two companies having the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z licenses? Anyway, IF Labs will be releasing figures based the Dragon Ball series. Look for likenesses of Emperor Pilaf, Bulma, Shao, Master Roshi, Goku and Monster Carrot. Look for this line in March. IF Labs will also be releasing their second line of the Dragon Ball Z figures. The other company that has the license is Irwin Toy. They will be putting out their own line of Dragon Ball Z figures. This one will come from the Buu Saga. Look for figures of Majin Vegita, Spopovitch, Goku, Great Saiyaman and Super Saiyan Gohan. These should be out in the early part of the spring (late-March).

Moore Action Collectables has decided to do a second line of the Angel series. Look for likenesses of Darla, Wesley and Lorne (the green skinned Host). Look for them some time soon.

Playmates has decided to jump on the small figure trend that started overseas. They are starting with a line of small figures based on the Simpsons license. They will be in three packs of some of the more popular characters. Due out now... look for packs of Bart, Grandpa and Apu; Homer, Marge and Lisa; and Mr. Burns, Smithers and Carl. They each come with small accessories for each character. I have no idea on the cost but I would put them in the $5-$7 range.

Toy Biz has not stopped on their Marvel Heroes line. Look for the Marvel Legends line due out now with four really detailed figures. They have the three Avengers mainstays of Hulk, Iron Man and Captain America as well as the ultra gross Toad figure. The second wave will include the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom.

That wraps it all up for this month. Take a look at the rest of the CT and tell us what you think.
