The Spiff-O-Meter

9 out of 10 on the Spiff-O-Meter

I know you’re thinking, "What? How can a movie about the bad guy in the second movie be a hero in this movie?" This movie is the rise of Mathayus and how he comes to be known as the Scorpion King. Mathayus is still far from becoming the evil Scorpion King. They could honestly do a very interesting film about the fall of the Scorpion King. However, that might make George Lucas a little cranky. After all, he is busy making a trilogy about the fall of Anakin Skywalker, which comes out this month *squeals happily*.

Honestly, I went into this movie with no hope for it having seen Blade 2 last month. This movie was everything that Blade 2 wishes it was. Scorpion King has a classic themes: good versus evil, and underdogs versus triumphant evil empire. One of the things I like about this film is that while there was a lot of action, fighting, and killing, there is really not a lot of blood and gore.

I was actually quite impressed with The Rock’s performance. Admittedly, I’ve only seen two episodes (I guess you call them episodes) of wrestling, but my main impression of The Rock was arrogant, annoying, and stuffy. His character, Mathayus, is not particularly arrogant, and he certainly is a lot warmer and human.

Mathayus is one of three surviving Akkadians. Within thirty minutes, he is the only surviving member of a proud race of assassins, who’s credo is "Live Free, Die Well." The Akkadians are being paid to assassinate the evil emperor Memnon’s sorcerer. Once Mathayus gets there, he discovers it’s really a sorceress. Mathayus’s brother gets killed by the evil emperor; thus Mathayus has a new objective: kill Memnon to avenge his brother.

It’s a really fun movie. It’s not the most complex plot or a piece of fine high cinema, but it is a whole lot of fun. It has that fine action adventure feel good feelings to it. You should go see it. It’s a great action film and a bonus for you guys out there, you almost see the sorceress naked many times in the film. She’s a very pretty woman and she runs around in very little clothing. Many other of the female characters also run around in very little clothing. In fact there’s a whole harem of women wearing very little. For the ladies out there there are several scantily clad men, not just the Rock.

So guys lets tally up reasons to see this: lots of action, scantily clad women, and if you’re a wrestling fan, The Rock

Girls let’s do the same thing: not a lot of blood, scantily clad men, and if you’re a wrestling fan, The Rock.

Stay turned next month for reviews of Spiderman and Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones ( doesn’t that just sound like a B-film title?).
