I started out this year talking about a few titles and ideas in the world of comic from the previous year. Next, I commented on the idiocy of Marvel and their money making schemes. Then, I decided to express my views about brining the mediums of comics and movies together. Now, by this time I figured that SOMETHING would have happened to really tick me off and give me a solid rant in the world of comics, but it hasn't happened
yet. What do I do now? Simple, I look ahead with as much of a positive view as I can muster up for as long as I can. Who would have thought that would ever happen? With that said here are a few new things that actually do have my interest peaked in the world of comics (or are at least related to it).
Crossgen
Solus - Thanks to Way of the Rat and Route 666 I'm a bit more prepared now to sink my teeth into the Crossgen titles. However, this doesn't mean I'm going to grab everything. I'm still pretty picky about what I spend my money on (no, I really am). While I don't tend to let an artist be the major influence for what titles I check out George Pérez is definitely an exception to that rule. His artwork, a new title, being put out by a company that seems committed to quality work . . . consider me there.
Silken Ghost - As I mentioned before Way of the Rat is one of the titles that got me into Crossgen's corner of comics. Now, one of the characters from that title is going to get their own limited series. Since the intentions of this character have never been made completely clear, a series that will give more insight into who she is is a must purchase for me.
DC
Formerly Known as the Justice League - Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire
returning to work their magic with heroes from their time on Justice League? I should start exercising more because chances are I'm going to wear my gut out laughing my head off. This is definitely the title I am most anticipating this year.
JSA: All-Stars - While JSA is a great series it's nice to see that we have a limited series coming up that is going to spotlight various members of the team throughout its issues. Since the issues are being written by David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns you can figure there aren't going to be any revelations that will be abandoned in the main title. Also, as an added bonus for me the long time Black Panther art team of Sal Velluto and Bob Almond will be doing the series.
The Outsiders - While the name may be familiar the team won't be . . . sort of. This title will be one-half of the fallout of a shakeup between the Titans and Young Justice. While I don't currently read either series I have really enjoyed Judd Winick's run on Green Lantern, and I can't wait to see how he takes on the various members of this team.
Teen Titans - Who seems to be the hardest working man in comics today? Yes, that's right, Geoff Johns. He is adding yet another book to his writing duties, and since in my eyes the man can't seem to do anything bad this title is guaranteed to be getting my cash for a while.
Dreamwave
Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye - A limited series that is a guide to who the various transformers are. No story, just the facts
I hope. You can bet I'll be comparing the information in this series with the information from the similar Marvel series from way back when.
Marvel
The Call - While the three series that fell under the "Call of Duty" heading fell short at the end I am interested in seeing how some of these characters evolve. People who were already heroes getting bumped up a notch after going through a pretty horrible experience? Definite possibilities for a little harsh reality along with heroism. Plus, I'm really enjoying Chuck Austen's work on Uncanny X-Men. Maybe with these characters powered up he can keep the momentum going this time.
The Crew - Just after I get done bashing Marvel for their "Tsunami" concept they have to go and get one of my favorite writers to helm a book under its umbrella. I don't know much about the book, but I do know that Christopher Priest is writing it, and that is all I need to know I HAVE to check it out.
Movies
Bulletproof Monk - Yeah, X2 and The Hulk will be nice, but I've been waiting for this movie since it was green lighted. I can tell by the trailers that the overall story has changed from the original comic, but as long as the fundamentals are there it should be solid. Chow Yun-Fat, martial arts, a comic I really enjoyed and Sean William Scott (Stiffler kicking butt . . . how can you not want to see that) . . . definite potential.
I realize that there is a lot more comic stuff coming up on the horizon this year, but for right now this is what I consider to be the most important to me. Now, I'm going to do my best to focus on anticipating these things and blocking out the bad for as long as I can. Of course, chances are you'll see me back next month with my fuse already burning again. Enjoy the breath of fresh air.
