I got sent a free preview of a weekly comic Things
From Nowhere, which is currently in a store near
you. Like the title says, the ideas and strips come
out of nowhere. The art is okay. Sometimes the
anatomy really makes me cringe. The writing is
interesting. Sometimes Kolkman is really funny and
sometimes you're just left there scratching your
head wondering what you missed. A lot of the
strips in the preview just seem to come out of
nowhere. Maybe I just don't get it, but for the
most part the strips just seem inane and
pointless. Sometimes the point of them comes
across loud and clear. For instance, one of the
strips has Japan going to the moon in 2018 to
photograph everything on it and the last panel has
a picture of Neil Armstong on the moon with a
boxed caption saying "However if the entire
surface of the moon in photographed and no
man-made object appears, then . . . Houston we have a
problem. I understand this comic implicitly, but
I find it's point and accusation stupid. The
strip with SuperMan crashing into Roswell and him
being stored with the aliens because the American
people could never accept that SuperMan was real,
is quite cute and funny, as is the strip about the
Pepsi Hospital serving AOL IV drips, but overall
the strips I've seen have been unimpressive. They
have no cohesion, and half of the time the joke
just falls flat on it's face. If you're
interested in seeing what type of comics he does
take a look at the site
www.thingsfromnowhere.com. Maybe it's
something that you'll appreciate, but I just don't
get it.
