Stormfield
by Wes Alexander

When I first came across Stormfield, it was a delightful comic in an anthology called Comics Library International. It was based on two friends named Alex and Dalton and them just playing together.

Today Stormfield is a comic strip syndicated by DBR Media (DBRMedia.com) and appears in 400 weekly newspapers. There are some startling differences between the comic book and comic strip. Alex went from being a nice kid to a more Dennis the Menace type. He regularly gets sent to the principals' office. Some of this is very funny but it is jarring to see such a cute looking kid do bad things. Dalton's role has been reduced, he usually appears in the strips but he's more the straight man that Alex plays off of.

Wes Alexander's artwork is still the crisp clean goodness I remember it being. Although it's a shame he's now limited to the comic strip format. There is less of his art to look at and I remember wonderful backgrounds in his comic book work. Within the comic strip format though, he makes the transition well. Although I suspect Wes doesn't like drawing hands as they are often in pockets or off panel.

Like most comic strips, there are graphic novel collections of Stormfield. Based on the samples I've seen I'd rate his work 4 out of 5 stars.
