For years youve been hearing me rant and rave
about Complex City, and youve probably been
hmmm-ing and haaaa-ing about, thinking "Ill pick it
up later when it comes out in trades." Well no
more excuses, Complex City the Trade is now
available. In fact the rest of Complex City is
going to be coming out in roughly annual trades.
The perfect yearly gift for yourself or some comic
lover close to your heart. Its new, fresh and
original, which arent things you see all that
often nowadays.
First thing about this trade is that its been
streamlined. The references to the lovable,
bumbling superhero Bulletproof have been taken
out. This absence, however, doesnt detract from
the story. It merely focuses the story on
detective Bulldog Malone and his case. Complex
City is a city with aliens, vampires, a vigilante
urban myth come to life, and an anthropomorphic
head detective.
Poor Bulldog has a really shoddy day or two in
this trade. Hes has to deal with the local
aliens, who have an immense amount of social
rules, the local vampires, who resent him coming
in and asking nosey questions, the mysterious
appearance of urban legend Crazy Quilt, who has
some very startling news for Malone, and the
bizarre disappearance of a book guarded by one of
the aliens.
This book is Complex City at its best. Its honed
down and concentrated on one major story arc.
Its by far one of the most original comics to
date and the storytelling is amazing and
captivating. Some of the original art has been
redone, so it all looks highly consistent. Its
an amazing book, and I think everyone should give
it a shot. Its worth buying even if you have the
original books, because it takes the story further
than the original four books did and the story is
more tightly woven. It also has a gallery of
guest artists interpretations of Bulldog and other
characters. I think that even those
people who dont normally read comic books would
enjoy this book. You should all go do what Ive
been urging you do to for years and go buy this
comic right this minute. www.bettercomics.com
