I was pleasantly surprised. If you like comics, this movie is pretty good.
Now, let's get the really cheesy stuff out of the way, shall we? The CGI is pretty bad in one spot, and unfortunately, it's the first time we see Catwoman in action. However, the rest of the time it's pretty good.
There is also a line that Catwoman says in the film where you just hang you head and groan. This is not Halle Berry's fault, she did her admirable best to deliver the line. She should have said it, it was the right line to say, and it was a tribute to the old TV show, but man, was it BAD.
Also, every time Catwoman goes on the prowl, there's a full moon. This makes for some nice cinematography and all, but it doesn't make a lot of sense in the time frame of the movie.
That's it. Really.
Now, if you are a fan of Catwoman, and you cna get past the origin not being the same as in the comic, and this NOT being Selena Kyle, but some other Catwoman in hypertime, you will be entertained.
To me, this all works fine. There were two Catwomans in the TV series, Julie Newmar and Eartha Kit. I am old enough to have seen this show when it originally aired, so I have absolutely no problem with seeing the Eartha Kit version of Catwoman portrayed.
I liked this origin and fans of Egyptian mythology will like this origin. If we can buy that folks get superpowers from the sun and from a radioactive spider bite, we can buy this Catwoman's origin. It's a damn sight better than a lot of origin stories we subscribe to.
"Well," Sheryl, you say, "What about that costume we've all been groaning about for months. Tell us about that!"
The costume makes sense within the context of the film, surprisingly enough. And it looks nice on film. All those tears in the pants look like tiger stripes. Whoever took those stills needs to find a new line of work.
Halle Berry proves she can actually portray a superheroine. With her portrayal of Storm in the X-movies, I seriously had my doubts, but Halle comes through like a champ here. She goes from the insecure, clumsy Patience to the secure, slinky Catwoman quite admirably and it's quite a homage to the Chris Reeves Superman transformation. We should all be expecting a lot more from Halle in the X-movies.
I enjoyed myself, folks. The plot was linear, the pacing was fast, and I didn't have time to get bored. If you like comics, I think you will like this movie. It's no Oscar candidate, for sure, but it's pretty good for what it is.
One thing I will say about DC movies, they make sure the creator of the character gets screen credit. I like that.
