Paul and I went to see Sky Captain and the World of
Tomorrow last night. All in all, it was a good movie, not
great, but good.
Maybe I've read too much of the 1940's pulp, or seen
Metropolis or the 1940's Superman cartoons too frequently,
but the story wasn't terribly original or frankly, interesting. I
thought the CGI at the beginning of the film was poorly done,
too.
However, the film's biggest attraction is the 1930's film noir
art deco style. It's beautiful, and the film is fabulous to look at
for the most part. It really is like seeing one of those 1940's SF
pulp stories come alive. The characters are attractive, and the
acting is good. However, the characters have no depth,
therefore aren't as compelling as they could have been. At the
end, I didn't care if the main characters got blown up or not,
and I don't think that was the film maker's intent.
There's a dead actor who acts in this film, and I thought that
was pretty cool. More I will not say because I don't want to
spoil the surprise.
Looking at the credits, it looks like the film utilized every
special effects firm in Northern California. Like I said, the
look of the film was really interesting.
I'd recommend going, mainly because this film looks so
different from anything that has gone before. If you haven't
seen a lot of old movies or read a bunch of science fiction
pulps, the story will be new to you, too, and therefore exciting
in a campy way.
