Desolation Jones is about a former spy who couldn't handle the job and
became an alcoholic. He was taken off duty experimented on in some
manner, then sent to LA to retire along with the rest of the former
spooks. He still takes on freelance spy/private eye related jobs for
those within the spy community. That's where we start.
This first issue we meet him, his supporting cast, learn a little
about what happened to him when he was experimented on. He gets a case
to work on and we see some graphic violence.
I don't want to give away too much of the story but lets just say the
case involves WWII and dirty movies.
Warren Ellis does something different with this. Jones is a very
violent person when he needs to be. When he goes into "violence mode"
he no longer cares about anything but his own survival. He gets a very
black and white perspective and Warren had the art goes to black and
white during this period. When it's over, you go back to full color
and see the gruesome results of Jones's actions. There is more to it
than this, some graytones and other stuff is used but the coloring is
going to be an interesting part of the book.
Jones also openly smokes pot. I know there was some drug use during
Alan Moore's run of Swamp Thing, but I'm kinda surprised I haven't
seen much of it since. At least I don't recall a regular pot smoking
main character within Marvel or DC.
The book is drawn by J. H Williams III. So far the only art I've seen
are headshots of the main character, but in all this looks
interesting. This could be the new Transmet.
