This direct-to-DVD has been out for a month now. I
haven't seen too many comments about it, so I thought
I'd share my thoughts in the "burning questions"
format (with mild spoilers):
Q:
Bottom line, first. Did you like it?
A:
I was a bit unimpressed. The animation didn't
have to be innovative, but I was hoping for more
looks-wise than something reminiscent of the old FOX
Spider-Man cartoon. Don't be duped by the meaning of
"age-old enemies" on the package. Me, I took it to
mean old Avengers super-villains (which made me
salivate). In reality, it was an alien threat --
somewhat similiar to the same threat in the Justice
League animated series opening episodes years ago.
There's some nice scenes with Captain America, WWII to
the present, but it was close to being overdone.
Q:
But it's rated PG-13, right? So, any adult
language, sex or violence, or something with that
"ultimate" Marvel Comics flavor?
A:
I saw no reason why it was rated PG-13. A
character says "Damn!" once. Overall, I didn't think
this feature was any more violent than the super-hero
cartoon fare I saw back in the day. There's certainly
no sex to speak of. If you were to be prudish,
there's one scene where you see some of Black Widow's
cleavage and another scene where the Wasp's bust is
kinda exaggerated. So what? With this rating, I was
hoping for something a bit more "adult," I would've
settled for something "mature," but I got a product
that leaned more towards a kids-aimed audience.
Q:
Did the actors seem to capture the voice of the
characters?
A:
I thought the women leads were great! Grey
DeLisle did a fine job on the Wasp; young, perky.
Olivia D'Abo did a pitch-perfect Black Widow, complete
with a dripping Russian accent that made me shudder.
Nick Fury is voiced by Andre Ware -- which makes me
wonder if it's the same Andre Ware who is a former NFL
quarterback.
Q:
A:
There's a teaser or two on some future animated
Marvel projects coming direct-to-DVD, an Iron Man
feature and another Avengers one; I don't know if
that's good or bad. There's a more lengthy feature
with comics pros George Peres, Kurt Busiek, et al, who
have worked on the regular Avengers title. There's
also a segment with fans auditioning for voice roles
which borders on funny to geek-embarrassing. One chap
did to a good William Shatner and Christopher Walken
impressions as Marvel characters though.
