This month’s comic is actually a comic that Zack picked up at the comic shop but looked interesting enough for me to pick up and read. The tagline on the cover proclaims loudly "1st Barbaric Issue!" How can your interest not be peaked by a comic that bills itself as that?

With that tagline I was expecting something like Conan the Barbarian. Actually, it’s a far more intelligent comic with a brighter hero than that. The story in the first issue is not exactly original. Guy had girl. Guy has several jobs to earn right to marry girl. Guy goes out on second job one night and slays a horribly minion of the evil horde. Guy is paid generously and told to leave town before said evil horde comes and kills all his loved ones. Guy marries girl and prepared to get the hell out of Dodge. Hell comes crashing down around his ears. It’s a fun story, but it’s not horribly original. At least this time the guy got to marry and get jiggy with the hot chick before bad things happen.

What is truly amazing in this comic is the art and the coloring. The art is astoundingly detailed. There are beautiful panels with full landscapes in the background. There are details in the mundane objects as well as the extraordinary. The digital coloring is just beautiful too. I’ve seen a distinct problem with digital coloring looking flat and fake. There is nothing flat or fake about the coloring in this comic book. Another thing that I found impressive was the digital inking. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen that technique used before.

While a little gory, I wouldn’t say it really stands up to it’s barbaric tagline, but it is quite fun and if you’re feeling adventurous go give it a try.
