A BLUE MOON

Since I began collecting comics, there are only a few times when I've stopped collecting specific titles. There were a few times I quit collecting in general due to moving and finance issues, but I really don't have a list of titles I've stopped reading. The largest collection of titles I quit collecting were all the X-titles during the idiotic cross over period of the 80s and 90s. The sad reality is that the reason I don't have to worry about dropping titles is because they tend to get cancelled on me. That or I know I'm only going to be making a short term commitment to a title due to an interest in a story arc or a specific writer.

Yet it seems the time has come once again to actually drop a title. While I liked the original 'MAX' style of the Squadron Supreme (in the title Supreme Power) the current Squadron Supreme title just isn't keeping me interested. I'm a fan of J. Michael Straczynski's work (shows and comics), and I know that his concepts can take a while to reach their "pinnacle," which is actually something that I enjoy about his writing. Unfortunately, I just don't care about any of the characters as they are being written in Squadron Supreme. It's not the language difference or other "adult" elements that are gone now that the series has left the 'MAX' corner of Marvel, it's just that I feel like I'm watching wheels spin. So, after I researched the first upcoming trade of Squadron Supreme and found that it would include up through issue 7. So, with issue 7 I will be done with Squadron Supreme in the monthly format. I will only pick up the trades after that if I hear good things from those that continue to read the series.

On a bit of a "funny" note is the fact that I am dropping Squadron Supreme even though I am more disappointed with Geoff Johns' current Green Lantern run. Of course the big difference is that I am much more connected to the Green Lantern concept, so I am giving that title a bit more leeway because of my desire to keep reading something related to Green Lantern. Though with Green Lantern Corps and Ion going on right now Green Lantern is quickly moving towards being dropped, and after having made the decision to stop collecting Squadron Supreme the decision will only be easier.

Me actually dropping titles is something that only happens "once in a blue moon" but right now I have a feeling there could be some major lunar oddness that results in such a thing happening. I sincerely hope that doesn't come to be the case as I really don't wish for this to be a start of a trend. I guess I'll be finding out soon enough though as I've given Green Lantern one more story arc to impress me.
