I picked up this book a while ago, but somewhere
between finishing school, finding a job and buying a
house it slipped between the cracks and I have only
just now discovered it. This fact is a terrible shame
because it is a deeply entertaining book. The Rookie follows an alien weapon, a guy, and a girl. It is, in short, a superhero soap opera. It has all of the hallmark traits of a soap opera: murky family trees, angsty deaths that aren't really deaths, implied sex, and the inevitable "I'm pregnant" announcement. In the world of the Rookie there are few options for meta humans. You can be a hero and die defending the country or you can try to hack your way through the binding laws that forbid meta humans from all jobs that can be done by humans. Max is a rare exception. Max is the only normal human to actually graduate from the Hero Corps academy. Max has spent the past three years studying the aforementioned Alien artifact so that when it's current wielder dies he can pick it up. The Rookie is the tale of the guy that had the hammer before Max, the tale of Max and the tale of the daughter of the guy that had the hammer before. It's humorously sprinkled with references to actual comic book heroes and witty one-liners. It deals with logical problems associated with having superpowers and how one copes after having to kill someone in the line of duty. Overall it's a fun book with pretty standard comic book art. If you like realistic/melodramatic takes on superhero-dom, pick up this book. You can look at a four page preview here: http://www.gregmoutafis.com/ It's the second item on the right hand column.
