My Game Needs Help

By Mat Bredfeldt

Hello, everyone out there in Gaming land, Mathew B. here I'm normally the Collectables Guy for the Collector Times, but I have many other hats I wear. One of those hats is fledgling Dungeon Master for the Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 game. I need all of you out there with D&D 3.5 experience to help me.

The first thing I need to know is should I build my own world or use a pre-generated one? I have played in a 3.0/3.5 game of Forgotten Realms in Cormyr, but something like the Forgotten Realms should be handled by someone with experience in DM'ing and they should have some knowledge about the history of the Realms. Plus there are a whole lot of books I would have to buy that are 3.0 and I really like 3.5 more.

The other major setting that is out there for D&D 3.5 is Eberron. Eberron is a setting created by holding a contest in 2002 that created this whole new world for players to play in. I downloaded the Eberron Campaign Setting Book on Limewire and looked through it and it has some things that I like and some things that I don't like. I like the idea of a race of Living Constructs that you can play. I also like the new class you can play called the Artificer. I like the idea of having a non-Arcane non-Divine player buffer that can double as a low position fighter if the need comes up. I don't like the whole tone of the setting and I don't think I can do it justice. I do like the fact that it only has 3 years of 3.5 setting books to get and vary little history to learn.

I figure if I design my own setting than I can make my own history and start them on my own campaign. I figure I can include all the elements that I like from the various settings without having to use all of them and save some cash. The only thing is that it takes a lot of time to design your own setting; is it worth it? That is what I would like to learn from you.

Hopefully this will the first of a long line of articles in which I design my own setting and get you to help out with it.

Thanks,
Mathew B.
