So, it's that time of the month again, the time of the
month when I go cruise my comic shop aisles in search
of something worth reading and reviewing. This month
a shiny cover with a little boy, a bunch of tanks, and
an alien invasion caught my attention. This book feels like it is set in the 1950's. It doesn't say exactly, but the references to the Cold War, bomb shelters and the ubiquitous Leave It to Beaver era clothing leads me to believe that it's the 50s. It starts off with three boys playing soldiers and Martians in their neighborhood. Two of the boys go home, and the other stays to poke around. He goes into a nearby barn and finds a alien Transmitter. Being a boy and seeing a big red button on the transmitter, he is unable to resist pushing it. Things proceed to go to hell from there. Alien weapons crash to Earth and the military invades the boy's small town. The story is fun and good for all ages. The second half is a story of the space cadets that the boys all have outfits for. It's pulpy and fun and actually accessible to all ages. It's probably best if you explain the basics of the Cold War to your children if you're sharing it with them. Other than that, I feel it is very relatable. The art is angular and stylized. Sometimes it is a little hard to tell the dad from the next door neighbor, but overall, it looks good. If you're looking for a quick trip of nostalgia or just a fun adventure ride, this comic looks set up to deliver.
