I don't actually watch Supernatural. I'm a big wuss.
I borrowed a friend of mine's copy of season one. I
made it ten minutes into the pilot before I was too
creeped out to continue. A lot of my friends just
adore it. One of them asked me to pick up the origins
comic based on the series for her knowing that I was
into comic books. I've been a little remiss in
actually getting them to her, so when I was looking
for something to review I looked at them and thought,"What the hell?" Truth is the comic so far is significantly less creepy that the pilot was, and significantly brighter. I think perhaps if the pilot had better lighting it wouldn't be so creepy. Anyway, for those of you without rabid fangirl friends to squeal and tell you all about Supernatural, it is a show on CW about two brothers that fight the paranormal, demons, ghosts, you know . . . creepy paranormal type stuff. If the series was like the comic book, I would actually watch it. The comic book centers on the boys' father and what he did in the aftermath of their mother's severely unnatural death. It is, from what I can tell, the story of how John Winchester became a hunter of things that go bump in the night, a job his sons are now carrying on in the show. Having said that it connects to a television show, it does not appear to be dependent upon it for comprehension. I've only ever seen the first ten minutes of the pilot and about five minutes of a later episode. Sure my friends talk about it, but mostly they talk about how cute the boys are and how well the show is written without really revealing anything that would help me better understand this comic. I essentially came in cold, and so far I like it. The art is a little lacking. I prefer more crisp lines. A lot of times the art looks almost like they drew the bare minimum of lines and then depended on the inker and the colorist to make something out of it, which is to say half the time facial features blur into black ink blots. But the story itself seems to be solid. If you like the series, I really think you should run down to the comic shop and buy yourself a copy of it. If you're vaguely interested in the series, and are a big wuss like me it might not be a bad place to start. Who knows, maybe I'll try watching the pilot again in broad daylight.
