The first meeting of people fond of cartoons and graphic art "Ogolnopolski Konwent Tworcow Komiksu" took place in Lodz in 1991 and quickly became one of the most interesting cultural events in Poland.
Owing to the festival Lodz was named "the capital of Polish comic works". During the festival one can attend numerous lectures, workshops, join interesting discussions or visit an exhibition of Polish and foreign comics. There is also a competition for the best comics.
The festival lasts two days (Saturday and Sunday). It creates a great opportunity to meet many well-known illustrators and cartoonists. One should mention here G. Rosinski, K. Saudek, J. Skarzynski, B. Polch, and many other young Polish artists.
Year after year it attracts more and more illustrators and publishers. The popularity of the cultural event has led to announcing it The International Comics Festival.
Along with the festival there are many fringe events which are worth mentioning.
You can visit an exhibition presenting the history of comics and admire works of Polish artists. The exhibition is accompanied by comics sessions where you can meet artists and editors of famous comics magazines. You can also watch many cartoons such as classic films by Barbarella or Japanese manga. During the festival collectors have a suitable occasion for buying excellent comics.
The main aim of the festival is to promote comics and young talented artists. The International Comics Festival will take place on the 7 and 8 of October 2000 in the Community Centre (LDK) in Lodz.
Unofficially, creator Parker Smart has hired on Alp Altiner to finish up the inks on issues 2, 3, and 4. He is currently working on the Top Cow one-shot Witchblade / Darkchylde. Once the pages start flowing off Alp's table then the deal will be official.
Smart added his own pinup and one from former Extreme artist Rey "Rain" Ramos. Smart admits he's no Ross, but thinks that his skills will improve with time. Although many who have seen the pinup on the website say that it's better than some artists in the business. Monte jokingly added, "Are you trying to put me out of business?" Smart will continue to write the four-issue mini-series and the success of the limited series will determine the future of the ongoing series. "I want to be able to tell people at the Con that I can draw, but now well enough to showcase my work in a complete book", says Smart who receives many requests to draw pinups in only five minutes.
Unfortunately publishing over 3,000 issues disqualified the fledgling publisher from having a small press booth at the Comic-Con International in San Diego this year. So this year Spilled Milk will be in a small booth in the main hall. Four out of the five artists will be attending the Con in San Diego so covering the preview issue with signatures should be pretty easy. One can be purchased at the Con and it's a steal for $2.50 after having four artists sign it. Rey even says he'll be there. So if you can find him then that would be a huge bonus.
