Comics Review #2

By: Mathew Bredfeldt mathew_bredfeldt@hotmail.com

Here’s part two of the reviews of the comics that our intrepid editor went across country for. In case you missed my last reviews, here’s a link to them.

$poils #1 Beta

    COMPANY: Rumble Entertainment
    COST: $3.00

Spoils is a black and white comic, a style of which I am a big fan. Unfortunately, in this particular issue the art is rather rough and some times the characters in the background look like they were thrown in at the last minute. The artist also seems to be a big fan of throwing in lines when there should be a smooth unlined surface or on characters faces. Sometimes this is appropriate because the characters are in a high-speed chase, but most of the time it is unnecessary. This may be because (as the author mentions) it is the "Beta" version of the first issue that he put out for people to review and make comments on. The only other problem I have is with how the main character is drawn from time to time. On the cover for example, she is dressed in a black leather outfit and everything seems in proportion, but her neck seems to be a bit thin and long to hold her head up.

Now on to the story of this first issue, the comic’s main character is named Spoils. She is a bounty hunter who takes a job for a friend who is a former bounty hunter. Her assignment is to escort a cult preacher from Florida to Texas so he can testify against them. Unfortunately, the man is a bit paranoid about the government, so Spoils goes undercover to find out if he is the right person. He then breaks her cover and takes off in his car and a high-speed chase takes place. It leads to his work where he ultimately takes his own life rather than be captured by Spoils.

I would recommend this comic for readers aged 13 on up. It has some pretty graphic pictures and some profanity. Nothing more than you would find in a PG-13 movie though.

Rabbit #1

    COMPANY: Shark Bait Press
    Cost: $2.50

Rabbit is a fantasy comic done in black and white whose main character is named Rabbit. In the beginning, we see Rabbit riding a bird type creature across a desert. He falls prey to a giant snake type of creature and is nearly eaten, but he kills it from the inside. We then find out that these creatures are considered sacred and three travelers capture him and take him to the nearest town for execution. When we see him for the last time this issue, he is being thrown into the town’s dungeon awaiting execution, and he finally realizes what kind of trouble he is in.

The art is a 100% improvement over $poils with no unnecessary lines or characters that look sloppily done. The backgrounds are well done without being to complex, and the characters are well done and look almost normal while maintaining a simple quality.

The book has some funny moments along with some fighting. There is vary little profanity (the occasional damn shows up, but that’s about all) and no gory imagery. I would recommend this book to readers aged 10 on up.
