Gaiman first attracted critical acclaim for his graphic novels and the long-running comic series "Sandman." In addition to his comics work, Gaiman is the author of the best-selling novels "Neverwhere" and "Stardust," and has seen his unique vision translated for film, television, and the stage. He is the recipient of the prestigious World Fantasy Award and is noted in "The Dictionary of Literary Biography" as "one of the top ten post-modern writers" in America.

The author’s Guardian Angel Tours have always been special occasions, offering a rare chance to spend an evening with a master storyteller. In small, intimate theatres across the country, Gaiman has mesmerized audiences with poems and tales of the macabre and the fantastic. And in the course of these tours, Gaiman has raised more than $100,000 to support the CBLDF. But now Gaiman has announced that his 2000 reading series will be The Last Angel Tour.

"I've been doing these tours since 1993," said Gaiman. "I've really enjoyed returning people to the days when an author would take his work to the public, when a literary reading was something exciting, fun, and theatrical. Dickens did it. Oscar Wilde did it. And, in a much lesser way, so have I.

"I feel now like it's time to turn over the reins," he continued. "We always planned for the Guardian Angel Tours to come to a conclusion. The audience wants us to keep doing it, but at the end of the day, well, I think there has to be an end of the day. I'm finishing a new novel at the moment, and I'm working on a number of different movie and television projects. Finding two weeks a year to actually get out on the road is getting harder and harder."

On The Last Angel Tour, Gaiman will be reading from his shorter fiction and poetry, including stories from his collections "Angels & Visitations" and "Smoke & Mirrors." He will also be debuting new, unpublished works and giving fans an early look at his new novel, "American Gods." Each reading will be preceded by a private cocktail reception with the author for Premium Ticket holders and CBLDF Members, and followed by a question and answer session with the audience. The readings begin at 8 pm, with the private receptions starting at 6 pm.

"While this will be The Last Angel Tour, it certainly won't be the end of my work in support of the Legal Defense Fund," said Gaiman. "What they're doing is more important now than ever before, and I think we'll continue to work closely on new ways to raise money and awareness of the Fund's mission."

"Neil is by far one of our strongest supporters," said CBLDF executive director Chris Oarr, "and I'm extremely glad that he has devoted so much of his time and celebrity to the Fund. No one better understands that comics are an important medium worthy of respect. Neil's own work is proof enough, but the fact that he's willing to go out and make that case personally in so many places across the country makes him a truly special advocate."

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is a non-profit organization protecting First Amendment rights in the comics community. Donations and inquiries should be directed to the CBLDF at P.O. Box 693, Northampton, MA 01061. For more CBLDF news and information, pick up a copy of "Busted!," the Fund's free quarterly newsletter, or visit the CBLDF web-site at http://www.cbldf.org.

Best Comic Book Store in New Orleans, LA

New Orleans, LA

More Fun Comics of New Orleans, LA, has been named "Best Comic Book Store" according a recent local magazine poll.

Gambit Magazine’s "Best Of New Orleans" issue, an annual event since 1986, allows readers throughout the Greater New Orleans area to choose the top three names in such diverse categories as "Best Place To Jog", "Best Neighborhood Restaurant", and "Best Shopping Mall".

In the "Best Comic Book Store" category, More Fun Comics was named number one over local competitor "The Bookworm" and national chain "Barnes & Noble".

"I’m obviously proud to be the top of my category," commented owner Steve Thomas. "Being ranked above a national store like Barnes & Noble just proves that the customer service I’ve honed from over 25 years of retail experience can win out over a stronger brand name."

More Fun Comics is located at 8200 Oak Street, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

CROSSGEN SIGNS FOREIGN PUBLISHING DEAL

TAMPA, FL., September 18, 2000

All of CrossGen Comics' titles - Mystic, Sigil, Scion, Meridian, CrossGen Chronicles, and The First - will soon be published in France as French language editions thanks to a new one year agreement between American publisher CrossGen Comics and French publisher Semic S.A.

Semic will publish these French Editions on a bi-monthly basis beginning in November 2000. Each edition will contain two American comics. Each of the first issues will contain 64 pages for a cover price of 29 Francs except for CrossGen Chronicles #1 which will have a cover price of 25 Francs for its 48 pages. Following issues will contain 48 pages for a cover price of 24 Francs.

The first two titles to be published in November are Mystic and Sigil, followed by CrossGen Chronicles, Scion, and Meridian in December, and then The First in March. Semic will distribute these French Editions to the newsstand and bookshop market in France, French-speaking parts of Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, and the French overseas provinces.

According to CrossGen's Marketing and Distribution Director James Breitbeil, this is a move made to not only strengthen the CrossGen brand, but expand it as well.

"This agreement with Semic is a fantastic opportunity for CrossGen to broaden its scope and appeal outside the U.S.," said Breitbeil. "Semic has recognized the broad appeal of CrossGen's titles and the growing strength of CrossGen's global consumer brand. With this agreement, CrossGen will be significantly enhancing its commitment to foreign markets and its place as an international entertainment company."

CrossGen will support this launch by providing an original Mystic cover by Brandon Peterson to French comic book magazine Comic Box. Comic Box has agreed to run the cover in conjunction with a feature story on this French launch.

According to Comic Box Editor Lise Benkemoun, the French market is ready for CrossGen's arrival.

"We are very happy to see that CrossGen will be publishing their comics in our native French," Benkemoun said. "We've seen the excitement they've generated in the U.S., and knowing the French market, we hope they can do the same here."

CrossGeneration Comics is based just outside of Tampa, Florida. Since their initial launch on May 24, 2000, CrossGen Comics has set unprecedented sales records for a new start-up comics publisher by debuting their first five releases on the comic book industry distributor's Top 100 sales list. Since then they have grown into the comic industry's fifth largest publisher. Their unique and innovative approach to comic book publishing is sure to make them a company to watch out for well into the new millennium. The CrossGen Comics, Mystic, Sigil, Scion, and Meridian are available in comic book specialty stores everywhere, with a different one on sale each Wednesday.

GAIMAN TO PREVIEW NEW NOVEL ON LAST ANGEL TOUR

Acclaimed author NEIL GAIMAN has announced that he will be previewing selections from his upcoming novel "AMERICAN GODS" as part of THE LAST ANGEL TOUR. The tour, Gaiman's last on behalf of the COMIC BOOK LEGAL DEFENSE FUND, will bring the author to New York, Chicago, Portland OR, and Los Angeles for a series of dramatic, intimate readings from his fiction and poetry. All proceeds from these events benefit the non-profit CBLDF and help protect the First Amendment rights of comics creators and retailers.

Gaiman first attracted critical acclaim for his graphic novels and the groundbreaking comic series "Sandman." In addition to his comics work, Gaiman is the author of the best-selling novels "Neverwhere" and "Stardust," and has seen his unique vision translated for film, television, and the stage. He is the recipient of the prestigious World Fantasy Award and is noted in "The Dictionary of Literary Biography" as "one of the top ten post-modern writers" in America.

The four stops on the Last Angel Tour will be Gaiman's final public appearances until the release of "American Gods," currently slated for summer 2001. Gaiman describes the novel as "the closest thing I've done to 'Sandman' since I finished 'Sandman.' It's either a fantasy novel or a theological thriller. A murder mystery or a horror novel. Or a short story collection . . . it includes all those things in its makeup." Gaiman has previously offered fans glimpses of the work-in-progress at the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Members' Reception at the 1999 Comic-Con International, and aboard Making Waves, the CBLDF Fundraising Cruise.

The Last Angel Tour will be the seventh reading series Gaiman has undertaken in support of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. To date, these Guardian Angel Tours have raised more than $100,000 to protect free expression in comics. Earlier this year, Gaiman announced that the 2000 Guardian Angel series would indeed be the Last Angel Tour. "It's two weeks that I don't get to do other work," Gaiman explained. "I have too many stories to tell right now. So it's time to call it a day, but this will be one fun last tour, and I think we're really going to make an impact."
