One my other reviews this month covered a book that raised the question what constitutes a mini-comic. Sure enough, a mini comes along in the same day which puts it to the test. Late Night Coffee and Cigarettes is a collection of 8 poems written by Juliette Torrez with illustrations provided by Scott Mills. While this mini skirts the line between mini-comic and zine the quality is never in doubt.

First of all, this book has excellent production quality for a mini/zine and is a really amazing looking package. The poetry by Torrez spans a variety of subjects and nearly all of the poems hit the target with vivid imagery and imagination. In particular "Walking in the Moonlight," a recollection of a hurricane’s effect, and "The Thief was Kind," a victim’s reaction to having their car broken into, are both very well presented works.

The accompanying pictures by Scott Mills compliment the poems very well and enhance the message and theme of them. While the poetry is certainly strong enough to stand on its own, Mills’ illustrations make for a more well-rounded package. This book was certainly enjoyable and I look forward to seeing more work from these creators. For further information on this and other works contact kapowbooks@chickmail.com.
