Judgment Calls by Patrick Dunning

Hello and welcome to Judgment Calls. As it turns out, I wasn’t dead, and as I understand it, there was a pool going about that. Whoever won I expect my cut of the winnings, ANYWAY. As for why I’ve been M.I.A. since the beginning of the year is a long story...remodeling, computer crashes, power outages, school, and other things got in the way, and it always seemed to hit the last week of the month, usually when I get all my stuff together for my column. Anyway, I’m back, if anyone cares.

A lot happened while I was away that I could neither rant about nor praise; The new Spectre series, the new Green Arrow series, uh other things, but I don’t feel like talking about those now. Instead ,I feel like ranting incessantly about something that’s pissing me off.

WHAT THE HELL IS WITH ALL THESE DAMN JLA SPECIALS?

JLA vs. Predator, JLA:Black Baptism, JLA: Incarnations, JLA: Gods and Monsters, JLA/Witchblade, JLA: Our Worlds at War, JLA: Act of God, JLA Secret Files... It’s too damn much, way too much, and this is only up to April. Do you realize how much more garbage they’ll cram at us by the end of the year? This is sheer over exposure, trying to drain every last cent out of the comicbook geek public. This is ridiculous, this is akin to the early nineties variant covers craze...you remember, when there were at least 8 covers for any remotely (and many non) important issue of any comic, even if it wasn’t doing well. At least there are different stories in this, but still, this is nuts. I am a JLA fan sure, but still my comics budget is limited. It’s not the ONLY title I read, and I don’t appreciate having all these damn specials out at basically the same time. I haven’t read half of them, and I’m not interested in reading them, either. It’s not for skimming through and not liking it, it’s just too damn much JLA. They have a normal title... USE IT, make it bi-monthly or something if you have this many stories to tell, but jeez, cut down on the freaking specials.

Oh, I am enjoying the normal JLA title, it’s damn good, but when at the comicbook store seeing it in the rack immediately followed by two columns of special JLA comics it’s getting a little out of hand. Tis is reminding me of the X-men, which in my opinion has too many things going on too, that’s why I stopped reading it awhile ago. JLA has now become X-Men like which I don’t like, i.e. TOO MUCH STUFF, a new special out every week. Pretty soon it will probably have rotating creative teams every three damn months, as now as I understand it, Mark Waid is leaving JLA for Cross Gen. Great. Just when I was getting into HIS JLA.

I’m serious when I say if JLA continues the way it is, I will drop the title... this is getting fucking out of hand... And it’s not just the fact that the JLA have this many specials, they’re everywhere, in the normal titles of other characters I constantly see while walking through my local comicbook store ‘guest staring the JLA!’ Yeah whoopee do, can’t one hero save the damn universe without the JLA anymore? I can remember so many things in comics that were killed by over exposure (Punisher, and Ghost Rider come to mind, which took near 5 years to recover from their over exposure). I’m getting sick of the JLA.

Oh and yet another JLA special is on the way, the ‘comicbook geeks wet dream’ JLA/Avengers. Which at this point, I’m not even sure if I care.
