What I Care to See

"SPIDER-MAN"

Sam Raimi is a genius. Yes, ever since Evil Dead, I have loved Sam Raimi. He has come up with such wonderful works as American Gothic, Army of Darkness and The Gift. ( Let's not talk about his Producer's duties on series like Hercules and Xena ). That's why when I heard he was the one directing Spidey, I had high hopes! Well those hopes were met! The CGI seems to be at a point that it can be made believable enough that we can appreciate the wall crawler's antics, and the script was believable enough that we could really buy into Peter Parker and Mary Jane...

Still... that's not to say I didn't have minor problems... Let's take that word apart, believable. As a movie director, the idea was to make the character believable, therefore modifying the character ( i.e. biological web shooters, DNA spider instead of radiated )... these are not major changes and did not spoil the movie, I just hate the excuse given. If we believed Peter Parker could invent mechanical web shooters himself in the comic, then damn it! He should have been able to do it in the movie :) ... But I digress... the movie was wonderful, Willem Dafoe was just an amazing Norman Osbourne, and I could not have picked a better Peter Parker. Mary Jane was great, as was the underloved Harry Osbourne. And let's not forget the great casting they did for J.J Jamieson... what would Spider-man be without him, I ask you?

If you're reading this webzine though, I guess I won't need to tell you to go see it now... I'm sure you already have.

"STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE CLONES"

Okay, I loved the movie. That much is clear. But let me ask you this? Does anyone else think George Lucas is messing with the heads of people who hated Jar Jar Binks by making the well-loved C-3PO the really goofy one here?!?!

I can't speak for non Star Wars fans, but from a long time fan perspective, this is what we've been waiting for these 20 some years... this movie is the history behind statements like "You fought with my father during the clone wars??" and "Powerful Jedi was he... Powerful Jedi". It recounts the tale of Anakin Skywalker during his Jedi prime, all the while hinting at his looming downfall. The first part of the film largely focuses on Padme and Anakin's falling for each other despite all odds, and then develops into pure Star Wars action to the core, delivering many severed limbs ( and heads ) and lots and lots of lightsabers! And if you ever doubted Yoda was ever that great: eat your words, YOU WILL!

The only problem I had was that the start was a little dragged on, and C-3PO was a little over the top in the Genosa Arena... But other than that, this film delivers everything Star Wars comics have been delivering for years. True multi-Jedi scenarios and many planets and creatures to chose from, and Bounty Hunters too!

It just gets better the 2nd and 3rd time you see it.
